Default Cabo report 7/10-7/13

just got back from cabo about an hour ago. we fished 4 days in a row just going for marlin. flew in on wednesday and got to the marina around 2. found some guy that was willing to take us out for 4 hours. headed out on a little panga and trolled these little tuna feathers for sierra mackerel and roosterfish...or so the captain said. well 4 hours later, no roosters or sierras, just the smallest amberjack ive ever seen. anyway got up the next day and headed out with some charter fleet called los dorados. trolled all day looking for anything, but nothing at all. thinking we were about to get skunked with marlin for the first time ever, we decided we'd troll in. bout 30 minutes later outrigger clip popped, but no fish. we dropped back a live bait just for the heck of it to see if there was anything back there and what do ya know, line starts peeling off. FISH ON!!! after a decent 45 minute fight with a niice striped marlin on a spinning reel, we snap a few pics and release him. wanting to end it on a good note, we packed up and headed in for the marina. Next day, got up and headed out. someone had mentioned to us that the water had warmed up and the fishing should be a little better. Not long after lines out, the drag started screaming on the trolled caballito dead bait (caballito is the bait they use down there,,,some kinda jack im pretty sure). 30 minutes later, we release our second stripey. lines back out, we start trolling again. one hour later, another dead bait gets nailed. HUGE dolphin, or dorado as they call it down there, takes off. after a nice 25 minute fight we sink a gaff shot right in the big bull. dyas looks pretty good so far, right? well we keep trolling and later hook up on another marlin. 2/2 on marlin and 1/1 on dorado. still doin pretty good, we start trollin again. the captain spotted a tailing marlin so we zoom on over and pitch a caballito to it. not long after we got a fish on. after a looooong fight on the spinning rod, we pull up a tail wrapped striper. me and my bro were persistent in that we could revive it, but the captain decided that we should keep it. hmmm, we were pretty pissed at this decision, but ya cant argue with the captain. that was it for that day, quite a good day of fishing, besides having to kill that marlin. grill up some fresh mahi that night, tasty tasty. next day we head out early. about after 30 minutes of trolling, we hook up with another HUGE dolphin, this one even bigger. after a long fight for a dolphin, bout 45 minutes, we gaff it and hoist it over the boat. lines back out, we troll the rest of the day with absolutely nothing; first time we havent gotten a marlin out of cabo in a day. so head out next day unsure of whats going to happen. right after putting the lines out the left flat line gets nailed. this is one acrobatic marlin too. its first initial run had our 50 wides screaming on strike drag, but after that it just kinda laid down and relaxed as i reeled in the smallest marlin i had ever seen, probably only 80 pounds. Thinking this will be a great day, after this quick action, we eagerly toss the lines back out and continue trollling. we spot a 300 lb mako but coudlnt convince him to eat so off again. During the sourse of that day we spotted 5 other tailing marlin but couldnt entice ONE to bite. kinda disapointing, but hey its called fishing not catching, right? well we still had a great time and loved every second of the trip. we will be back soon and we cant wait. my brother took all these pics so credit goes to him for some truly amazing photos. hope you guys like a LOT of pictures.

caballito means "little horses" in spanish. they are the mexican term for goggle eyes.

Thats what I thought. When I fished Zihuatenejo we used gogs as well. The fishing was so good they didn't even bother trying to keep them alive. Just iced em. Course this was 15 years ago, I'm sure they have modernized thier fleet a bit since then.

I would submit that photo of the dorado jumping parallel to the water in the overcast sky to the dolphin photo contest. Sick pictures all around.
