I use my 920XP Electramate with two battery clamps. But this is 12V your 24-V is different you need to put two batt together and connect pos+ on one and - on the other batt that 24v. I never had a problem with mine ass far as shorts, but always keep and eye on it.If something goes wrong I just pull the plug. But I know there should be and inline fuse on that plug power supply.Hope this helps.
Cheers, DL

If you cross your batts up to get 24v I think you will also be sending 24v to you boat!
There is a adapter you can buy from west marine but I would just take two extra batts with me for the reel. |

Unreel, You may not retain the best electrical connection by cutting off your plug and going to the small battery clips similar to the ones used for a hydroglow light. For electrical reel operation, under load say with a 10 lb. weight and a stringer full of fish, you will be drawing a fair amount of DC current even if you have stepped up the voltage to 24 VDC, perhaps as much as 10 amps, not sure for the Kristal 621 (but that is a low end machine as far a powerful units goes). What I have done for my applications is rig up a connector for the hydroglow light with a matching plug that is on the electrical reel. If you have plug outlets on your boat then plug them in there, glow light or electrical reel. In the event you do not have a plug on your boat (or someone else's boat for that matter) I have rigged up an adapter plug that you can plug into your electrical reel plug. On the other side of that adapter plug is a dual connection feature, run through heavy guage stranded wire (I think 8 gauge off the top of my head). The other end has terminal rings crimped and soldered to the stranded wire along with a light duty connector, the terminal clips. So if I need to just power a hydroglow light (12 VDC - 3.5 amps) you can simply use the clamps to attach to the battery terminals (low current draw) and if I need to power a DC motor (electric reel) I will use the terminal rings and clamp it to the battery(s) with wing nuts. (Most marine batteries come equipped with the lead terminals and threaded studs/wing nuts for ringed terminal wiring attachments. This provides a strong electrical connection to meet the continuous current demand without overheating, likely to be caused by an under-rated spring clamp connection. As was mentioned previously, 24 VDC connections are not the easiest setup solution if you are not willing to invest into the right equipment. The Satellite battery approach is the easiest way to get it done, one battery is connected to your boat in the normal fashion and one battery is isolated and rigged in series to give you the 24VDC you need; consequently it does not automatically get charged back up, until you re-wire it. You're actually better off with a 12VDC electric reel, until you are willing to get the right equipment to adapt it properly such that you can get your 24 VDC and keep both batteries charged up too. That is one of the reasons why an LP S-1200 electric reel is so desireable, it is a simple 12VDC solution, understandably the price is out of sight for many deep drop fishermen, but if you were to take a traditional LP 24VDC machine and add in the isolation/charger equipment needed to rig it properly, the extra money is not that much of an extra leap. But you have your Kristal 621 24VDC reel already: just be sure to keep extra fuses with you all the time. Have fun deep dropping. D.L. - I think you may have meant to say to make your battery connections in SERIES to get the 24VDC, not parallel.

NOOOOO!!! To get 24 volts from a pair of 12 volt batteries they MUST BE IN SERIES. Parallel connection only doubles the amperage output at 12 Volts!

Alligator clips will work and make your reel an easy connect/disconnect but not provide the best connection. Power for your reel is a product of the voltage times the current flow and the current flow is reduced when resistance is introduced into a circuit. Alligator clips are going to somewhat increase your resistance to current flow and make your system less efficient.
For the best possible connection system - regardless of the reel you buy - connect #8 wires directly to your battery lugs with heavy ring stakons. In line with your wires place a suitable fuse, or better yet circuit breaker of suitable size, in the positive line. From there use a 120V 20Amp Marineco outlet and install a matching plug on your reel. It will give you an easy connect/disconnect and will provide the best connections possible. One last tip - where the wire goes into the plug you will have an easy place for SW to enter so just seal it really well with some RTV or silicione sealer. |
