I put this on another thread but i think it deserves its own forum. I'm guilty of this myself. When you have someone on a charter who thinks he can do better than your mate. What are the best ways to politely shut him up and make him sit down. Im sure every charter cap has dealt with these guys. Im curious to hear your tactful replies.

It depends do you want a tip or this guys repeat biz?If you do you let him do what he wants as long as it does not indanger himself or your crew.Remind him he is paying for the service and should enjoy the trip.If he still wants to offer advice or do things himself let him or do what he wants you to do.After his way does not work tell him you are going to try your way etc.If you dont want him back or care about a tip tell him to sit down and shut up or you are going in with out a refund.

I try and gently embarass them into taking a back seat. There are a number of ways to do this, but picking up a rod and out fishing them usually gets thier attention quick. I agree with Quack though, if they aren't bothering anybody or endangering themselves or others let em do it up
. I have been on the other side of the coin as well. I was on a charter in Mexico and wanted to bill and release my own sailfish ( to me its half the fun ) The Capt was nervous at first. First I followed his instruction until I gained his confidence and he let me handle a couple of fish. No hard rule applies to these circumstances IMO

So what if he wants to do it himself?
I would rather set the hook and handle the rod myself, I don't want the mate to grab the rod on the hookup. Keep in mind, the customer is paying for this and, as somone else said, if he is not putting anyone, including himself, in danger does it really matter if his way or your way is better? I do understand the frustration of watching someone do somthing wrong and having them reject your assistance, but "the customer is always right". And you never know, they may actually have a better way of doing somthing.

I'm not a mate but when I see someone doing something that I don't think/I know isn't particularly effective I'll wait a little while and (since people are usually talking about fishing while fishing - imagine that) I'll work in the right way to do something into a story. If they are too dull to pick up on it, their loss. Professionals aside, most people are pretty insecure in their fishing techniques and will eagerly seize upon someone else's idea or tactic if they think even the slightest bit it will give them an edge. That's why fishing magazines and :ahem: forums are so popular.
I have had people ask me to come on their boats to show them how to swordfish and in those cases, I just take over the cockpit and explain why I do everything I do and why I don't do other things. They asked me to teach so I teach. |
