F-ing Thieves

Last night several boatyards in Pompano were burglarized.
One of them is where I am having my motor worked on.

Bastards stole my lower units and props; and took the lowers off another boat there.

Apparently about a dozen lower units and some electronics were stolen from a couple of yards.

If you Believe in Karma those scum have a lot of bad Vibes com'in to them.

12 lower units are kinda hard to move(sell), There must be somone to fence them in the area. Unless there dumb enough to try and sell them on Ebay.

Do you have to buy new units now or dose the yard have insurance? Someone who works there that could have done it...

Sorry to hear that Donk, I'll take you fishing when I'm down there in June/ July if your boats not ready by then.

I appreciate the offer, but one way or the other I plan to have my sled in the water again before too long. The yard's insurance should cover it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the stolen stuff is headed overseas

I am supposed to fish a tournament in Bimini in two weeks...already plunked down entry fees and room deposits at the Big Game Club.

It's not a lot of $, but a PITA...plus got family flying in from PA to go fish...

Hopefully the yard can step up and do me right.

Don-Cant help you with the Bimini trip but if for soem reason you arent up and running soon you are welcome on my boat. Sorry about your loss. Guess the good news is that the replacements will be brand new.

I was misinformed this morning; only Hideaway Marine was hit last night; but there have been a few other incidents along that strech of US1 over the last few weeks.

I could probably push the issue, but I don't know that I really have a hook to hang my hat on. Plus I don't know that I want to start throwing even more money in the ring to litigate.

The real rub, to me, is that I don't have loss insurance. If anyone has recently tried to insure an older boat in florida, you know the drill.
The majority of the carriers declined as soon as I stated that the boat is over 20 years old and in Florida. (expect for liability only)

Only one company actually quoted me; on an agreed value of 40K I was looking at $5500 per year. $450 a month is a little steep for me to manage at this time.....except that is around how much I am now going to have to shell out for lowers and wheels..

As an after thought, you can bet your asz that I am going to pull the lowers and props next time the boat comes out of the water!

Not too much of a PITA, and I'd rather they sit in my garage than be a temptation for some cheese-dik scumbag mf'ing crack head to walk off with.

Don, did you see the police report?? Was there any negligence on Hideways part?? ALso, get Hideways insurance policy. A call to the insurance Co, by you or a lawyer, might get you some results without setting foot in a court room. I wouldn't give up just yet!!
I spoke to my GF about it last night and that is what she suggested. She's going to do a little research today and see if she can find a similar case.
I'll let you know if she comes up with anything. She's a med/mal attorney but was a prosecutor with the miami DA for 10 years...a real ball buster

Man that sucks Don.I would follow up like Steph said with there ins company etc.Get a copy of the police report or sure.Good luck with the replacement parts search.

It's a hard and expensive lesson learned, and hopefully discussing it helps prevent someone else from getting victimized!

I am starting to think I bought a cursed boat? first the document stuff, then the powerhead, now this..all within five months....know any good exorcists?

Don, the GF just sent me a couple of emails with case law dealing with marina's trying to waive liability. Looks like you definitely have a leg to stand on. I will send you that in a minute.

You should absolutely get a written estimate.
You should absolutely get the policy or at least the name of the insurance Co
and put them on notice (letter) that you will be filling a claim.

If it's 5000 or less it is small claims. If you will like My GF can guide you through the process (freebie)

Sorry to hear that it happened to us last sept in my back yard.The bad thing is the boat is only insured for theft of the whole boat because its on a trailer.With a deductible of 25k. Had to buy remans for about 8k. Put a alarm and mercury switches in the motor move them 1" and the alarm goes off and it will e mail u and txt u too. Good luck and die Thieves

Thanks to all that commented on this thread; and special thanks to Nightcrawler for the legal info..it really helped to leverage a resolution. Hideaway Marina agreed to meet me 1/2way on the replacement l/u's and props, and cut me a good break on the labor for the other work I had done. I will go back that yard, but I am insured now, and I would still remove anything that is not thru-bolted and 5200'd down...(a couple of minor things were pilfered while there....dock lines, swim ladder, ? not sure yet what else). I would most likely take the time to pull the lowers next time I lay up...just to prevent the aggravation.

Anyway, I need to finish the rigging (riggers, top, some wiring) but she's floating again...with some new body art to boot. (Kudos to Stu Chernoff working out of Ohana Boats in Pompano...if you need letters or logos he did a great job), the teeth I painted freehand:
