Double D Charters 03/15/03

Although we have been having summer type weather, the fishing the past two weeks has been excellent. There have been plenty of sailfish around. The afternoons have been better for sailfish, especially after 3:00pm. Wherever there has been blue water and North current, the sailfish have been there.

Kingfish action has remained pretty steady, and we are starting to see some of the bigger spring kings in the mix. We, and others, have been catching 20 – 30 pound kings on quiet a few of our trips.

The bottom fishing has been excellent as well. For those that have been concentrating on bottom fishing, there have been quite a few mutton snappers as well as big black groupers. We even caught a 20-pound grouper on a flatline with a herring as bait this past Thursday. Talk about a pleasant surprise.

Bonitas have also invaded the reefs, and although they can be a nuisance while you are targeting the glamour fish, they do keep a bend in the rod, and fight pretty damn hard.

The deeper wrecks have been holding quite a few amberjacks, and during the middle of the day, when the action slows down on the reef, we have been dropping on some of these wrecks and catching quite a few amberjack.

Dolphin haven’t been around in big numbers, but that will change pretty soon. The same for blackfin tuna. Both those fish should show up any day.

Keeping fairly busy during the day, I haven’t been swordfishing for a week or so. I may be going tonight or tomorrow night, and the reports from the sword boats is good. There have been a few caught, and the ones caught have been on the bigger size. I did hear of a 270 pounder caught a few nights ago. Now is the time for the swordfish trips. The weather has been really calm, and the summer droves of boats haven’t been out, so if you want to catch one of these brutes, give me a call and lets set up a swordfish charter.

Don’t forget about the summer Bahamas trips, I have already booked a handful, especially for the full moons for the muttons. I do have the full moon in May open, so if you have muttons fishing in mind, give me a call.
