Joe Franz/ 1 Bandit asked me to post a fishing report of our trip on Sunday on his boat, the Plan B.

Joe, his wife Tammie, her friend Christy and I rolled out out of Ft Morgan for a day of bottomfishing. We had taken a look at the color 3D bathymetry CD from Kiva Consulting and picked a few likely looking spots west of the Petronis.

Christy, Tammie & Joe

We saw some good looking bottom and decided to drop on it. Up comes this....

...my personal best Golden Tilefish and my first Golden Tile to break the 20 pound barrier since I began Tilefishing in 2006 off Stuart on the east coast.

Joe got his first ever Golden Tilefish, about 5 pounds, on the next drift. We marked plenty of Tile burrows and will visit this site again. We also marked dozens more Tile colonies while we headed west along the 750 foot contour to find Snowy structure.

I had fished my boat and several other boats on the east coast and had never been able to mark Tile "structure" - but now that I know how Tile structure looks like here in the Gulf I think I'll be trying to push the 30 lb, then 40 lb barrier, maybe even 50 lb barrier next.

We dropped on a good-looking spot; the ladies got a few Snowys but nothing big. About 5-10 lbs. We headed in to do some scamp fishing. Got a few Scamp and a snapper in 250-300 foot.

We had to endure two hours of very rough seas on the way in...

Here's Tammie & Joe all bundled up.

Here's Christy posing with the day's catch.

...and then Christy and me posing with the day's biggun.

Thanks again to Joe for a great day out on the water. :five: Dinner afterwards was fantastic - pan seared scamp - tile - snowy, green beans, sliced taters, designer beer.

Screw Miami - I'm Fishin' Alabammy,
Catch-All :)

With a great November weather window, decided to do an overnighter offshore Sunday and Monday. Crewed up with Steve, Kyle, and my son Michael Jr.

Stopped by the triangle wrecks on the way out to try for flounder and bluefish (for bait). Mostly found BSB, all of them would have been keepers but had to release them all (NOAA closed our season north of Hatteras). Steve got one that was very nice.

Do manage some throw back flounder and Michael gets a keeper 22 incher.

But still mostly BSB, all released, so head east. Stop by the Ocean Venture and more BSB but they seem smaller. But the bluefish are there, nice sized ones. Steve looses a potential paper bluefish boat side. Enough messing out, head east.

Get the mouth of the canyon and put the trolling spread out. I knew the troll bite was a long shot but I'm an optimist. Find the warmer water from 60-65 degrees overboard but water is dirty and little signs of life. Troll around until sunset chatting with the Waterman who also overnighted debating on where to set up for the night. Nothing on the troll, few marks. I settle in around the 575 line at 750 fathoms for the night and the Waterman sets up east of us I think around 1000 fathoms. Not a single pull. Reposition at moonrise around 11 pm more inshore around 300 fathoms. Had plenty of squid around the lights at 300 fathoms. Despite the almost no wind the whole night, the Labrador pushes us southward at 1.1 knots so we covered some ground for sure. But not a single pull all night. Nothing for the Waterman either for the night. I was very optimistic the swords would be there but nada.

Slick calm seas all night made for a relaxing night for movies but pretty uneventful. I had both a harpoon and flying gaff on the ready but didn't get to use either. Sunrise we are pretty close to the blueline hole near the 300 line so try there.

Didn't find the bluelines there but was loaded with BSB. Dang...this would have been an epic BSB trip but decide to not keep fishing there as it's just too hard to release nice knotheads.

Head back to the canyon for more dropping. Decide to search out a new golden hole so just find an interesting looking area and blind drop. First few drops were bluefish. Dang, bluefish are already covering up the canyon walls. And small sharks too, not dogs but sharks still. Resposition again for another blind drop in a new area and find the goldens. Nice class of goldens. Work this area for a while to keep 8 goldens to save more for later. Everybody gets a nice sized golden but me as I was the king of the sharks and bluefish.

Kyle even cranks up a double with 2 big ones. (and we are in 90 fathoms, I'm sure he will be sore tomorrow) :clapping2:

Perfect weather, great crew with the goldens saving the day. Having goldens and flounder for dinner tonight. :D

As of NOV 1st season is closed until April 31th, I believe, I have the paper work in my truck with the exact dates. This was a change that most people didn't hear anything about so be warned. Thank god an FWC officer clue us in on this because even he knew that change wasn't to publicized and printed out copys of the new rules. I left on at LMR for everyone, and can fax one to who ever wants one. just an FYI.

Put the Electramate to work today. :lp: 4 snowies 3 of them over 20pds out of 800' all on Bonito chunks. The current inside 850 was to the south east about a knot, outside the wall current was none existent. Tried a drop for swords but with no current we gave up after 30 minutes. On the way in we ran across big patches of grass with tons of bait (caught a few) traded the baits for a few dolphin and tunas on the next patch. Two drops on a deeper wreck south of American light turned up a mutton and a big mangrove. We had a smorgasbord of fish for the fillet table. I guess it just wishful thinking that NOAA will ever back off the one per Snowie limit, now that its in place.:bang:

We took a friend of ours out who had never been deep dropping let alone way out deep sea fishing of any sort. The girls did pretty good on the queens and I did really good on the sharks or they did good on me. Couldn't get a fish past them to save my life.

This brought up a question I was talking with the guys about. The girls never got sharked once on the way up and were using braid, I on the other hand got sharked every single time except once and was using a wire line. Do you guys think there is any relation to using wire and getting sharked all the time?

Anyways here's a couple of pics.

Erika first time out with some of here nice queens.
