The wind finally dropped on thursday enough for us to squeeze in a trip. Left at 8am and caught the last hour of falling tide. First 2 wahoo were in the boat before 8:20, had just set out 3 of 5 lines and the double was hooked. Trolled almost to six shilling and back. Finished the day with 9 kings, 4 wahoo and 2 cudas. Never got that many kings in one day, most is one or two, but 9 is unheard of here. The biggest which was 25-30 hit in 45ft of water as we were going to snorkel. Here are my attempts at action shots, kinda hard to gaff and take photos :(

Chuck, Tommy, JC and I saw the weather window and figured we would head out to the blue water again before Striper season shifts into high gear. Decided to head south of the point based on the satellite shot and we were rewarded with a nice pile of fish for the dinner table. We ended up going 5 for 5 on 40 pound class Wahoo, 1 for 1 on YFT, 6 for 6 on small Blackfins, 1 for 1 on a small gaffer and boated countless FAs. All in all an incredible day.

Water temp was 77.8 degrees and we found all the fish where there was strong, 3 kt. plus, current. The YFT came at the 490 line in 110 fathoms on a pink and white crystal hair seawitch, the Mahi came off a forming weed line on a green squid spreader bar at the 500 in 80 fathoms, the FAs were everywhere and hit everything and the Blackfins came at the 570 on the 100 fathom curve all on the bird/GM. All five wahoo were found at the 579 on the 100 fathom curve right on a very steep drop off where the bottom went from 60 to over 120 fathoms, three came on the planer pulling a Baitmasters flying fish on wire and the other two came off Ilanders with medium ballyhoo, the surface strikes always followed a planer bite.

Saw a HUGE Manta ray jumping clear out of the water within 75 yards of the boat as if it was trying to bite our baits??? It was every bit of 12 feet across. Never seen that before, I was in awe.

Thanks to Tommy, Chuck and JC. Wahoos YFTs BlackFTs, Mahi and FAs for fun. There is a lot of life out there right now!!!

Just returned from leg 1 fishing Friday and Saturday. Before I say anymore - thank goodness we were in the 54 Hatt as the guys in the smaller boats took a real beating.

After checking in Thursday we tried fishing south to determine if there were any fish at all as what has been caught lately has all come from north over the top of Iasacs and down to the Gingerbreads. There were so many weeds to the south that trolling was literally impossible. We quit after 1/2 an hour and our decision for friday was made - go north.

On Friday we cleared the checkout point at a bit after 6 and ran out and made the turn to head north. The wind was a solid 25-30 knots out of the ENE and we could see a couple of the go fast boats (we do 18 knots) making a lot of spray and little head way up in front of us. Our plan was to keep heading north until the bank began to curve to the east thinking that was where the weeds would disappear and we could start fishing. I felt bad for the smaller boats as they fell in line behind us allowing us to knock down the seas for them to make their ride a bit easier. It was really snotty.

We got to clean water at 7:30, put our lines in, and kept heading up and then to the east. We got our first wahoo at 10:30 close to the end of the incoming tide. Once the tide turned we got another single and then a double so we had 4 in the box along with a mahi and too many cudas to talk about. Just before we quit we hooked another wahoo but lost it. Since even going "downhill" we only make 20 knots we trolled a ways back until we ran into the grassy water and then took off for the weigh in.

Our 3 biggest fish (one was under the torunament minimum) weighed 77 pounds and put us in third place. Only 6 boats weighed fish on Friday so you know fishing was slow.

Saturday morning the wind was about 5 knots stronger than on Friday and everyone but us was forced to go south while we plowed all the way north once more. It was a totally dry run for us as we never had the first fish. We found out later that of all the other boats fishing only 6 fish were caught Saturday making it an even worse day than Friday.

I don't know if anyone other than us ran home this morning as it was still very windy but almost due east which made for a better ride. It was mostly alot of rolling around on the way back but it is a big boat. It's one of the very few trips to Bimini that I was glad was over as two days of trolling into the wind and seas, and even going the other way, was tough on everyone. We were all beat.

I believe the day 1 tournament leader never caught a fish on Day 2 but was the overall winner. I thought it was a bit early to be having a tournament as the fish are too on and off this early with the water almost 84 degrees. I'm certain if the weather was better we would have had better fishing and the wahoo never seem to bite well after a front moves through and the strong high pressure and winds set in. Fortunately we heard of no mishaps or problems and everyone seemed prepared for the nasty weather and were seasoned winter wahoo fishermen. It was a shame that after a long stretch of relatively calm winds two really bad days fell right on the tournament but that's fishing! Congratulations to the winners. Harry

Attention all you Florida anglers, with the typical winter weather approaching, why worry about running your boat over to the Bahamas and dealing with potential wind issues. Either you plan to leave and can't or worse, get there and then can't get back!

We can offer a trouble free solution - weekend fishing trips from Freeport Lucaya on Grand Bahama.

Apart from the great fishing from Freeport/Lucaya another advantage in the winter months is that the prevailing wind is from the North and Northeast, leaving the southern shore of Grand Bahama relatively protected. Unlike the Abacos and even Bimini, in the Winter you can still get out to fish from Grand Bahama.

The Yellowfins have already arrived and the Wahoo are starting to move in with the latest front - water is still a little warm but should a lot cooler in the next two or three weeks.

We are positioned in Grand Bahama at Port Lucaya for this late Fall and Winter season at the Grand Bahama Yacht Club. In addition to the great fishing there are lots of things to do in the evenings at the Port Lucaya Marketplace and the Casino.

We have a great weekend package including flights from Ft. Lauderdale or Miami to Freeport, two days fishing, hotel and Freeport airport ground transfers - all from as little as $749 per person.

We also offer our normal 1/2, 3/4 or full day charters from as little as $150 per person.

Email us or call with your dates,

San Sal Wahoo Report

Fished San Sal early last week and the wahoo bite is starting to pickup. Not great numbers yet but the size of the fish caught were pretty decent...

Fished San Sal early last week and the wahoo bite is starting to pickup. Not great numbers yet but the size of the fish caught were pretty decent with an average weight of around say 55-60 pounds.

We fished the north end of the island from Green Cay north and followed the ridge to the tip 1200-200 ft. Worked both rising and falling tides but had the best bite about an hour or so before high tide all three days. Speed 10-12 knots, 3 rods and some pretty large lures and had action in all positions. There were a quite few sharks around White Cay and unfortunately lost half of nice one around 80 to them about 30 ft from the boat. :( But we did manage to get a good one (below) 114.6 lbs secured without a problem.

Did have reports just prior to of our arrival of a few 80+ pounders and another estimated over 100 but not scaled to know for sure. Heard of a cc coming over from the states fishing 30 lb size gear and from what I understand got spooled on 4 of the six rods so I guess they went home to buy bigger gear. If you go over and run anything less than 80's I suggest you bring an extra spool or 2 of line..... :linesnap:

Winter conditions in the Riding Rock marina can still be a little rough but if you’re planning on going over with a bigger boat you want to get a slip on the south end of the marina as far back as you can where the surge will be minimized or on the wall. The good news is for folks that want to take the trip over in a center console riding rock just took delivery of (2) lifts capable of pulling boats up to 34-36 ft and they have built steel cradles to put the boats on so surge is not an issue if you decide to do that give Riding Rock a call at 242-331-2631.

Overall this is one incredible wahoo fishery, big fish here and they is no doubt a potential world record can come out of here so make sure your gear is right and your loaded for bear..... good luck and Great Fishing! Jack
