Default Iridium or Globalstar

I am "in the business" and I can't impress upon you enough NOT to buy a Globalstar phone...The satellite service (reliability of being able to make or keep a call) SUCKS!!! I am expecting to receive news that this whole echelon of satellite communications will be taken off the air very soon!

Buy an IRIDIUM phone. The voice quality is quite good and the service is reliable all over planet Earth...

Radarsrus- Is the Globalstar situation still unchanged and shitty? I posted about this issue this past summer and then talked to Globalstar. They spoke of having many new satellites in the air this fall with much improvement in transmission quality. I have one on my boat and it used to work pretty well. I may need to switch to Iridium if they cant get it right. Does your company do mobile boat installations with docking stations?

Peyton and Dr. Bajakin,

Iridium over Globalstar. No questions about it. We are removing Globalstar units and replacing woth Iridium, Mini VSAT and Fleet SatComs.

I am currently on Deployment to Iraq and the Irridium phones work pretty well over here. However, Uncle Sam owns the ones I have used and not me.

When I return in June 08 i am buying my first "off shore" boat. I have taken my 19 ft bayliner capri about 18-20 miles off shore but that was pushing it cause it is really a lake/bay boat.

When I get my new boat I plan on hitting some reefs that are 30-40 miles out. Will I need a Sat Phone that far or will the range on my VHF reach that far.

Hey guys, how about that Iridium price list? Been looking for a phone. Wifey poo is too nervous about me fishing 25 miles out.

Poolman-I am not in the business but I am pricing one for myself. The phone itself is about 1400 dollars. If you trade in a Globalstar phone you can get a 400 dollar discount. Service is around 40 /month with 10 mins included and extra minutes are $ 1.30 per minute. If you want an external antenae and a hands free mounting cradle figure another $2500 or so plus installation. Pricey but insurance usually is, and when you need it -its priceless!

Depending on how often you go, you also have the choice of a rental. I'm aware is not as convenient as owning one but is just something you might want to look at. At 40 nm offshore, you should be able to get VHF reception and always make a phone patch with a ground carrier.....Just a thought... ..ps...Don't wanna take business from anyone but it could save some $$$$....
