Default Navionics Bathymetric Chip

FYI - Navionics makes a bathymetric chip called the "fish n chip". It is free with the purchase of a gold, or higher, Navionics chip. You can check out the details on the Navionics website. Just look under FAQ's. This chip is loaded with information that you cannot get on any other cartography and is invaluable for anyone that is either deep dropping or sword fishing. The laminated swordfish charts have about 20% of the data, for the same area, that this chip has. Is anyone using this chip and have they found it significantly adding to their success? I have a spot that we found marlin trolling in the Bahamas that isn't on any chart. It's a seamount in 2500 feet of water that comes up to 925 feet on the top. It's a super place for Marlin as well as sensational deep dropping when not infested with sharks. It appears on no charts or GPS chips yet is on the new navionics "fish n chip".

Any input from users would be appreciated. Thanks, Harry

Harry,

I have it on my Furuno NavNet 2. It's great. I've used it many times, and although I havn't landed a sword, it introduces you to new areas that otherwise would have been overlooked because of lack of knowledge.

It has helped me big time with the wahoo in this area by the reefs looking for the edge, and deep dropping, and bottom fishing.

I highly recommend it.

Harry,
I have the fish n chip. If you will give me an idea where to look I'll see if that sea mount is shown and let you know.

Are you fishing? It was clear on my post that my "spot" is not on any chart or chip but the navionics one. I know it's like looking for a needle in a haystack, as Bahamian waters are vast, but you already have it - you just have to find it. If you really want to know exactly where it is just send me a PM and I'll share. Harry

I use it too. But it's only as good as the data collected. It shows a lot of structure nearshore, and along the shelf edge on the sword grounds. But details seem a bit weak in the areas I like to deep-drop. (500-1000ft, from Pompano to Boynton.) For instance, the series of 50-90ft tall hills that I know exist are not shown. I don't think Wilmont's Lump is shown either, and that IS on regular fishing charts.

So, I guess as long as areas are surveyed well, the structure will appear on the chart chip.

Thumbs up

Since I have an old Standard CP150C gps chartplotter, I'm stuck with the CMAP NT+ chip system. My chip version, the NAC315 Bathy chip, is six years old from when I first moved to this part of Fla. I finally bit the bullet a month ago and signed up for CMAP's Club (only $89/yr). I am waiting for the Spring 08 update chip to arrive. I saw the updated NAC315 chip last year at the Miamah Boat Show and the amount of detail compared to the old iteration was amazing. I'm hoping new seamounts and other little titbits will show up that I can explore. Screw Tiley Town, I'm looking for Grouper Condo!

For those of us NT+ owners, I'll be happy to share info too.

I've had the fish/chip for a year and a half or so and like the detal alot, however I have found it to be not that accurate over the swordgrounds here, when I am marking a 200' bump drifting over it, it is no where to be found on the chip. fwiw

Hopefully, the gaps will be filled-in as future surveys are done, and made available in updated software.
