Question Pompano Dolphin.

Caught a strange lookin schoolie on our way to the Fort last week. Fat football shaped thing. Capt. ID'ed it as a " pompano dolphin ". Anybody else ever caught one...Wondering if its a mutation or what Theres a pic in the gallery.....I'd put it here but I'm picture challenged Its the one on the bottom

DF2,

There is actually quite a few Pompano Dolphin in our waters. Even in adulthood they are not very big and alot of people confuse a Pompano Dolphin as a regular small schoolie. Most people that fish for dolphin in the SE have caught some of this species whether they realized it or not.

My father caught one off Lower Matecumbe Last Sunday. It was the first one I've seen, kinda funky looking.

Yep, that's a pompano dolphin. I've only caught one ever, off of Destin, FL. When me and my second mate saw it, we both knew it had to be a pompano dolphin. They're too...dinner-plate-esque to be a regular dolphin Then we had a laugh at catching a "fake" dolphin. He was about the size of that one you caught, and I don't think they get any size on them at all.
