Default Islamorada Summer '09 Revisited

Well, we had another awesome week in Islamorada. Even though the weather was bad most of the time we were always able to make something work. We headed down determined to catch a swordfish after 6 previous unsuccessful attempts. And we were lucky enough to have a good friend lend us his boat for the time down. The weather looked good, there would be plenty of time and we felt totally dialed in on how we would get this guy...what couldn't go wrong? Well, nothing could we thought the first two days. We got the boat on the morning of the 13th and got everything ready. We didnt get out until noon. Set course for the 409 hump and about 5 miles away we spot some birds. We check them out and spot a slammer phin just cruisin around. couldnt get him to eat and he disapeared. So we work the birds for a little longer with nothing to show for until two slammers pop up. We hook them both and while fighting this pair, a third shows up. 30 minutes later we have three 30+ pound dolphin in the boat. What a great way to start the trip! We finally get out to the hump and pick up some tuna and head in for the day. Next day is about the swordies. We get out there finally after encountering some rough seas and make the first drop. After a bit of waiting some line starts to slowly come of the reel. But just as quick as it happened, it was gone. Swordfish? We don't know. It could have been bottom, but nonetheless there isnt a broadbill in the boat so we reset our drift. We drift for a while with nothing to show for and reel up to check our bait. Our squid was slashed right in half. This time we were pretty sure it was him just messing with us, making us that much more hungry to catch a swordfish. And that would be the end of good weather/the ability to go offshore for the week. We wake up the next day with wind, rain, and big seas. We boat over to holiday isle to see if we can pick up a shark or two and maybe even a tarpon. WE toss back our shark rigs and what do you know a tarpon comes rocketing out of the water with our wire leader in its mouth. WE get him boatside and snap a couple pics and high five eacother on just catchign our first tarpon. So we agree the weather didnt totally waste that day. The next day yielded a large barracuda and that is all. With the wind still howling and the seas still too big to go swording we have to stay in on the reefs. So, for the rest of the trip we are stuck yellowtailing, which although is fun, its not swordfishing. We had a great week and so much fun and we cannot wait to go back. I would give anything to live down there!! I will try to get the pictures up as soon as i can, but im in an airport and the internet is extremely slow meaning the pictures cant exactly upload quickly.
