Question Where are the MAHIS ?????

We spent 3 days trolling for Mahis. They were no where to be found !!!
Im kind of new to this but not even the charter boats were catching , any fish for that matter. OK.... The water was 85 degrees. It did not get any cooler than that. Maybe that was one of the factors. Not sure.
Then It was real flat. We went as far as 850 feet in depth NOTHING
There was a full moon the 2 nights before. PLease someone help me.
We went trollong for Mahis last month and did very well. What did we do wrong this time??? ANY TIPS WILL GREATLY BE APPRECIATED.

I would suggest you not spend three hours trolling, for starters, especially if you were blind trolling. That's a huge mistake a lot of folks make. You should also have some live bait and some fresh flyers and sardines aboard.

I prefer to run and gun for dolphin doing a little trolling only when I see rips or debris but mostly coming up on weeds and debris (on the right side considering wind and current) and casting livies or fresh dead bait. Don't hesitate to add some lead, as well, and drop some baits deeper beneath any debris or weeds as the heat of the day sometimes drives em deeper. You should also consider trolling your baits deeper. I have caught some nice fins that way using either cigar weights ahead of rigged hoos or diving plugs. Mix it up. Think like a dolphin. Act like one.

Tight lines.

I caught my biggest of the day on the planer about 60' down. Trolling down a nice weedline that I caught several others from. I was out at the 50 line.

Be the dolphin........
I think Juan hit it in the head, when the water is that hot, the fish tend to stay lower so a cigar weight or a deep plug works better. I also think the moon has to do with the fish bite, this weekend was close to full moon so they probably ate all night and were not interested in your offering during the day. plus the west wind for the last few weeks is probably pushing them WAY OUT, maybe 850 was not deep enough, I have heard of people catching them in 1000+ lately.

We ran out sat. found dolphin in 750 but smaller schoolies 850 had larger ones and a big momma cobia. 950 was loaded with blue runners . live bait is the key and dropping it deeper with a egg sinker will get you the big boys.

The wind has been out of the West for almost 6 weeks now...not good.
When the wind finaly shifts to the normal SouthEast flow we will be back in the fish within a week s time.

I have been fishing in SoFlo for many, many years and I do not remember a time when we have had prevailing west winds for as long as we have been having it. What is it, like almost five or 6 weeks now of constant west winds???

I also agree with the full moon, west wind theory, but sunday I got on a school of dolphin in around 300 ft and the schoolies were of all different sizes with the biggest being about 8 pounds and the smallest was bait size for sure, and WEEKLEY REHAB thats odd that you mentioned a cobia because while we were catching dolphin a huge fish which looked alot like a cobia actually eat a dolphin I had released right in front of me and a few on lookers in disbeleif. it charged so hard and hit the water like the biggest bass strike you ever saw... incredible, but when the wind changes from the west patern throw the spread out and cruise at 10 mph

Load up on bananas, make sure you apply sunscreen before touching the bait, and bring a camera with you

Catch 'em up Ricky

Default our fish have been deep 15-25 off..

and deep to 100' down ..nice fish though. take some time on dropping a live bait down and getting out some chunks it's well worth it.

it may be the difference between you being a hero or a zero... good luck.
