Default Handlining Golden Tilefish - It's The Shizzle!

I took three friends out fishing for GT's off Stuart Inlet, FL yesterday and had two fish in the box when the Penn Senator 12/0 reel decided to shit the bed on me when we had our third fish on all the way down at the bottom! The motorpack was fine, it was the reel itself that was making a horrible grinding noise. So we each took turns putting on the cowhide gloves and handlined that SOB up from the bottom. It was not fun bringing up 5 lbs of tilefish and 13 lbs of lead with line that kept slipping in our hands.

Tim saved thje day by suggesting we go for kings in shallower water. I hadn't kingfished in three years but reckoned what the hell let's give it a try. We hadn't been set up more than 5 minutes before the shallow bait went off and I grabbed it. 30 minutes later I gaffed my own fish and I had a 32.5 kingfish in the box, my biggest king ever.

Uncle Buck - yep, now I can say that I am more hardcore than Willi. But many of you forget that for the first year and half that I was deepdropping I was doing it Olde Skool, manually cranking shitloads of snowies and warsaws and snappers up from 300-600 feet.

Believe it or not, I still think that you lose fewer rigs from getting rocked up by using a regular manual rod & reel from a rodholder than you would if you use an electric reel mounted on a typical short, thick deepdrop rod. Just my opinion.

Nice king! Did you have to scrap the braid, or were you able to get it on the spool?

We took turns handlining it all in. One guy would wear the gloves and pull the line in, the other would be on the out of gear reel and manually revolve the spool to take up the slack line. Took 45 minutes of drudgery to retrieve all that 130 lb braid.

should have used a milk jug with a swivel attached and use it like an anchorball ... would have goten the rig to the surface fast and handlineing would be easier

Willi - not a bad idea but I reckon we were too concerned to get the fish and all the rig back to screw with tactics like that.
