Default What's your choice in Spectra Braid?

I just ordered a spool of Saltiga for my electric and hope it's as good as it's cracked up to be. Greg (sfcallen) and I both use electrics for prospecting in the deeper water and switch to manuals if the area looks promising. What kind of braid would you recommend for the manual reels? Thanks!

What does the j b line actually break at ? Is the actual strength over or under the labelled breaking strain or pretty close ?

Never used JB before. What are it's advantages over something like Power Pro or Battle Line?

Thinner diameter for one. I read a report of a test that was made in California and published on a web site that listed the actual breaking poundage for various braids. The chart was rather long, but the Jerry Brown that was tested (100 pound) scaled at over 147 pounds when it broke, and the 150 pound broke at an incredible 237 pounds. I like the thin diameter because I can use less weight to get me down. Doesn't make much difference dropping 60 feet, but when you're dropping 100 fathoms it makes a big difference. IMO, of course. If I can find that web site again I'll send you the link.

Incidently, that test reflected well on Power Pro also... don't remember the stats.

Darren: I'm sorry man. I was looking at the fish and didn't recognize you at first. Hope you've been well!

Jerry Brown is a Hollow Core Spectra, as apposed to Power Pro which is a solid spectra. The hollow core is hollow and much easier to splice. It is also softer and will not cut up other lines and guides like solid spectra. Jerry Brown is woven with no coloring added so it will not bleed all over and it does not have any wax on it like Power Pro. It is by far the best spectra and the ONLY hollow core spectra to consider.

Are you sure it's thinner Tom? Maybe the stuff I had in my hands was hollow core or something but the 80 seemed a lot thicker than 80 lb Power Pro.

My only gripe with Power Pro is you can get some bad spots when you buy the large bulk spools. They have always replaced it no questions asked, but it is pretty aggravating to get 1,000 yards into loading a reel and have it break for no reason.

Have you looked at any of the spectra coming in from Japan? Not sure on the quality, but it is definitely pricey. Only really good thing I can see on it is that you always no how much you have out due to the color changes on it.

I come over here from time to time too.

I was actually looking for some info on kites today and dropped into this board since I hadn't been by in a while.

See now. Jake thought I was being an a$$ hole when I told him you guys were fishing in the nursery. It's a lot easier to crank the big ones up in 400 ft of water than 1,000.

Mike, I got all that on the JB. I guess my question is, does it get down better for the same line rating than the PP does?

Darren:

The "Line One Solid" is the JB spectra I was talking about. I think the hollow core is larger in diameter, at least the hollow core 80 is larger than the Power Pro 80 when I look at them side by side.

You're right about us fishing in the nursery! Sooner or later (if I live long enough) I'll find the "adult" quarters! Wish I had my Loran C back... all the numbers I have are in TD's.... I could be 1/2 mile off using Lat's & Longs.

I happen to know someone that has a LORAN C on his boat that's dead nuts on. His boat also sips fuel and won't beat you to death.

I've had that nursery number for a couple of years, so it is possible you and I have some of the same stuff. If I have converted it to GPS I'll be happy to give you a LAT/LON. Give me a ring.

wow. THAT is a serious fish. To answer the question, I've recently switched from Power Pro to Berkley Big Game Braid. It's a little thicker than Power Pro, but it seems more durable to me, and it ties better knots in my opinion. The price isn't bad either, and I like the bright white color (although part of that has to do with the fact that I fish head boats and the white makes it easier to avoid/get out of tangles).

Thickness is definitely a concern to me when I set up a manual deep drop reel. For example, fishing in 300 ft for blue lines, I can get down with 8 ozs with 50 lb PP, but with 80 lb PP it takes about 20 oz to hold bottom well in the same conditions.

One of my buddies just set one up with the Cortland Spectron, but I have not had a chance to put my hands on it.

I've been using Berkely Fireline for years but a mate loves the jb hollow. Have I been living in the dark ages, does anyone else use fireline? It bleeds a bit for a while and after a looooong while gets a bit furry but it breaks at nearly 3 times the label rating and we've caught some honking fish on it.I've been using the 80 fireline on a manual deckwinch and thinner sizes on rod and reel depending on depth, current and target species.
How long does the jb last befor it loses strength ?
I used the original spiderwire chasing New Gunea black bass one time and the stuff wore out after 3 days solid spinning.

i used 200 jb i bottom fish a lot of oil rigs get many break off but thats the name of the game, cause u have to be almost on top of the rig leg for the warsaw to eat. the advantage is the hollow core is the knottless connections. i also use a 500lb wind-on/with a break away weight.
