Default 6/6-6/7 Spencer/Wilmington Canyons

Headed towards the spencer canyon yesterday and dropped lines in around 50 fathoms.

It didn't take long for the rigger clips to pop. As I was setting out the second line both got taken by 52" bluefins. One took a 9" canyon runner rainbow squid bar and the other took a ballyhoo skirted wiht a blue and white sea witch.

With the pressure off we reset the whole spread this time and continued to troll the same area. Over the next 20 minutes we caught another 4 bluefin, releasing 3. The one we kept was a fat 45 incher which finished out our bluefin limit. All these fish hit rainbow squid bars.

Despite reading fish on the sounder as thick as i've ever seen, we decided to run to the water in 500 fathoms of the wilmington hoping there would be yellowfin or some action at night.

got another hour and a half of trolling in the warmer water and released two more bluefin before deciding to setup for sharking.

had some run offs and some sword leaders that were chaffed through by sharks, but for the most part we couldn't produce at night.

we went 2 for 3 on bluefin at 6am and decided to wrap up the trolling. releasing the fish was just too much trouble without a transom door.

headed for some new tile ground and dropped down our first line at 6:45am. over the next 4 hours we had the largest per fish average we've ever had. took home 12 fish, some fresh and most for the freezer, and only 2 were less than 20 pounds. 6 fish were over 30 pounds, and 4 of those six were over 40.

45.5# and 47.75#....he needs to hit the gym so he can lift these fish higher...

Awesome report. It's cool to see that you're out of Barnegat Light. If I'm not mistaking that's on Long Beach Island correct? My grandmother has a house is Beach Haven.

Yes we are out of Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island. We fished 8 to 10 different areas from 490ft to 650ft. All using either shimano 30 toriums or 30 torsas on trevala and a tallus rod with 65lb braid. They ate squid, bluefish chunks, and ballyhoo. Some of the fish are going to my brother's science classroom so he can feed his students while he closes out the year teaching about the ocean and marine life. Others are going to a friends party next week for about 30 people. They are some of the best fish I have ever had

doug forgot to mention that we fought a sword for about 4 minutes before the hook pulled close to the boat.

he also fought a monster tile for a while before it got tangled and broke off.. likely 55+....

OUCH ON THE BREAKOFF NICE CATCH . WE HAVE DISCOVERED THAT IF YOU LEAVE THE CLEANED TILEFISH ON ICE OVERNIGHT THE MEAT WILL "RELAX" AND TASTE MUCH BETTER THE 2ND DAY. OUR MARLIN CLUB CHEFS HAVE CONFIRMED THIS - SIMILAR TO SUSHI GRADE TUNA.

ron, that's right -- i feel the same about swords as well. congrats on the 60!

i also like to cut the tiles' gills and let them swim around in the transom livewell. it's not a friendly way to go but those filets are the whitest meat i've seen after they bleed out.
