I have been checking NWS and Weather Underground the past few days. Apparently a big fat high pressure system is going to squat on us for a few days over the weekend, bringing calm seas and light winds. That's why the weather predictions have the wind direction coming from so many directions. It's like a compass spinning when it's over a magnet.
I'd love to get out swordfishing but I need to put together a trained crew first before I do that. So it looks like a combo deepdropping/dolphin fishing extravaganza on Saturday and Sunday. Best of luck to all of you and go git 'em. Catch

Willi - I've been swording dozens of times Up North and once down here. At least with my style of hardcore fishing, I don't want to take along a short-handed crew who are drunk before we've even left the dock. That's what happened the last time I went and we wound up Lesbian Fishing the whole night. As my dad loves to say, "I'm gittin' too old fer this shit."
I got stuck doing all the f**king work and the one time I tried to catch a little shuteye after telling one of the guys to keep an eye out for freighters, I woke up one hour later when I could hear the thudding of a freighter's Bunker-C engines thru the hull. I looked up and the sumbitch was only a 1/3 mile away headed dead at us. I had to cut all three lines, start up the engines, haul in the 12v underwater fluorescent light and haul ass. By the time I scooted out of the way, he was only 100 yards off my stern when his bow cut my wake. I kicked the sonofabitches awake and headed in early.A side note: even though I have a high-performance radar reflector on my VHF mast and my boat was well lit, that freighter was going straight for us. Most of the ships off our shores nowadays are crewed by illiterate foreigners. The third watch that mans the bridge from midnight to 0800 is short-handed and the least experienced. THat means the guy at the ship's helm is usually alone on the bridge and asleep at the wheel. He might have the proximity alarm on the radar set, but that's not always a given. The ship that almost ran us down obviously didn't have the radar's comic book alarm turned on. Bottom line? Stay awake and stay alert. Mark Catch-All

I see Mark . but when i`m on the boat .. I dont drink and dont sleep ... wont have a freighter running us down on my watch ...have to admit getting a crew together is hard ... ... would say your boat is great for drifting ... it is a long night and worst is the run back home ,cleaning the boat and fish if caught ...who said swording isnt hard work !!!... but last few trips didnt put any swords in the boat .. just a few tiles ... and the biggest yet for south florida standards...Willi

Mark-we Were On The Hotdog Chunking Several Years Ago(this Is 45 Miles Out) Along With About 85-100 Boats All In A Group. Well Anyway A Freighter Came Right Through The Fleet Without Changing Course. Between The Engines Starting And The Vhf Chatter There Were Some Busy Captains. Yes You Have To Be Observant Day Or Night.

Ron - yeah, I've chunked at the Hotdog many times on my boat. 70nm due South of Great Egg Inlet. A single boat almost getting run down on a clear night is one thing but for a freighter to smash his way thru a huge, brightly lit anchored fishing fleet? That's reckless and despicable. Did anyone get the name and country of the vessel in question? After being forced off the ball like that, I would've chased
the fockweasel down and called the USCG.Willi - good luck fishing this weekend, catch 'em up. Catch

Mark- It Was Day Time When That Freighter Came Through The Fleet On The Hotdog. Your Jet Ski Mahi Sounds Pretty Neat. Several Years Ago Some Adventure Seeker Was At The Hot Dog In An Inflatable Zodiac With An Outboard Chunking. Quite The Talk With The Fleet On The Radio.
HOPE YOU ,WILLI ,AND THE REST ENJOY THE CALM WEATHER AND K S B (KILL SOMETHING BIG) THI WEEKEND.

Ron - that's too funny about that longhaired filthy
hippy buffoon on the Zodiac. I remember seeing him out there. I forget whether it was Summer of 01 or 02. The closest land was 38nm away at OC,MD. In comparison, the farthest out I ever had my jetski was 17nm off OCNJ; I had compass, GPS, VHF, safety gear, etc etc onboard. My bet is the filthy hippy had no nav aids whatsover, just followed the fleet out the inlet like a lemming going over the cliff. From the looks of him and his craft, he was living on a used cruising sailboat and was fishing for tuna so he could sell 'em and supplement his workmens comp disability scam he had going. Catch

Ron - while you're out in sunny Seattle, watch out for those Starbucks-swilling, Alternative-music listening, MicroSoft motherf***ers out there.
Catch p.s it was sunny, calm and I killed a few somethings.

Ron, I've heard of drinking it from a "traveler cup" after stumbling out of a friend's party. But a stemless wine glass? WTF?
