I am looking at getting into deep dropping, and with everything else i do with regards to fishing I go all in or not. Which of the 600 series reels are good. I dont mind spending the extra $ to get a reel that I can use later on, instead of trying to upgrade.
Thanks adam |

I opted for the kristal 651 .... more line capacity and power. I'm happy with it

Adam -
There is kristal and there is also LP. If you want to stay in the 6XX family line-up that is OK. (kristal) But if the depth of your pockets is not a primary concern, you may want to consider the LP s-1200, like Jerry mentioned. (You may never have to upgrade again, just maintenance.) It is truly a remarkable piece of machinery, that also operates on a simple 12VDC supply system. I've used this reel and have no complaints, to date. (One time, the level winder seemed to get stuck on several occasions, but some lube seemed to cure the problem.) You can get at least 60 lbs. of drag with this thing so be sure you have fortified rod holders installed, should you need to bear down on the drag. |

i have a 621 and it does the job, i have caught 2 30lb AJs and it struggled alittle. I also came into a deal with a eletra-mate 920 with a 6/0 reel( i think) and that thing is a beast. Also on a rod selection i really like Welcome to DeepDrop rod that they sell. It works in any rod holder and allows the reel to sit above the gunnel and not hang over like other rods. Good luck

If you want the best reel then the Miya Epoch Command X-9SP or the 15SP are very good. More standard features then any other reels on the market. The miya epoch models have been around since 1971. All have over ride hand crank and the new SP features ATC, automatic tention control system. power is close or if not moren then the LP and Kristals, they have more standard featurs then those also. programmable zero stop (same as LP top function), variable speed control (40 settings) about 0 to 360 ft/min, auto and manual wind (same as everyone), Programmable Dept memory (after the first drop program the depth and drop to that same dept every time hands free)(LP&kristal dont have this), LCD which shows depth, speed, rotation of spool, etc (LP has depth only), FULLY WATER PROOF (saw at a show submerged for 4 days straight while winding)(i dont know if LP or kristal can do this), adjustable drag and minor adjustment with a knob( similar to others), low consumption under 20AH (Kristal about 30AH), some other stuff i cant remember off the top of my head.
I used to have a CX-9SP and 15SP before i gave them to a friend because i have no time now to fish. =( Loved them, Last edited by Electricfishing; 02-15-2007 at 08:19 PM.. |

I have 4 Electric Reels. Two Dolphin Electreels and two LPs. The first LP is an 80 W Penn with a big LP motor mounted to it. I have caught 100o lb Tiger shark and 80 lb Mystic Grouper and AJ with it The newer LP is the 1200 which is the best that money can buy with all the power that you could want. If you dont want to spend the money for that reel or dont want/need a big bulky electric reel the Dolphin is pretty cool and is a nice compromise of power and line capacity for the money. Its a 50 W Penn with an external motor and i have it filled with 130 lb Power Pro. I wouldnt recommend it if you are wanting to do routine 1000 ft drops, but for 500 to 800 feet its nice. Besides being smaller and easier to stow and carry, it has the added advantage of having a reel handle so that if you lose power or the motor should fail ( as they all will eventually) , you can crank it in by hand.

not really just2fish.
.it is not so bad when there`s fish on the line ... not any worse then reeling in a AJor sea donkey plus I have all the time in the world to reel it in ... if you crank to fast ... I find that the fish have a better chance of coming off the hook!

Depending what type of budget you on and how deep your fishing the deep drop pro is a great unit goes for 900 dollars but will last forever i have owned mine for 4 years and fished them hard and never had a problem with them. Good Luck

It sounds interesting that you do it manually. I would like to hook up with you to see it done & try myself. You make it sound challenging but not too difficult. You keep mentioning taking your time which me wonder what exactly do you mean. Mike |

Hey Mike , sound s good to me ... where you live ? the only challenging thing is figuring out your drift and current .. as for taking your time ... I found if I crank it up fast with a fish on .. it usually but not always comes off ... plus you wont get to tired !

Disco lady apparently finds this too funny. I'm always ready for a challenge. Besides I've been suckered by charter captains in the past to drop in on 200 - 300 feet and have brought up big fat AJ's. I do remember getting tired from trying to crank too fast (while the captain kept his mouth shut in the fly bridge)
I live in Miami but I do most of my fishing in Key Largo. |

I was looking into a "manual assist" reel to give me the ability to fight a sword or hit a switch to retrieve the rig for a reset.
Daiwa Dendoh™ Electric Deep Drop and Kite Reels at Anglers Center Anyone use this or one of the less expensive units? Cyrstal looks like the safe bet if you just want an electric reel.

It is very heavy, much heavier than any 130 class reel. The bull's are fine for golden tilefish, blueline tilefish, seabass, grouper under 60lbs and such, maybe a little light to battle a big grouper out of a coral tree. I think you can pull about 44lbs of drag out of them. We have 1100 yards of 80 power pro on one of them and 150lb of JB on the other one. |
