Default Deep Dropping Tournament / Contest

After the holidays we are going to start a deep dropping contest. I'm still brainstorming on the rules and guidelines. But it will most likely be a 3 month tournament with proof of size and date of your catch.

The winner will receive some sort of deep dropping tackle prize.

I'm intersted in input from others on this one.

Mike

Sounds like a plan Mike! Maybe the biggest Tile, Grouper, red porgy etc.
I wouldn't want to see Queen Snapper or Yellow Eyes ... cuz that would mean going to the Bahamas which a lot of us are not gonna do. But whatever .... just my opinion.

Good idea Mike. I've always said I'd like to see a new FS Bash be started in late winter/ early Spring for deepdropping only. KDW tournaments are a dime a dozen. How many deepdrop tournaments do you hear of?

The catch would have to be verified by photo and weigh-in slip from known tackle stores with certified scales with pic(s) of fish on the scale. That's just for starters.

As for Bahamian-caught fish, the opportunities are so much more for big fish over there that it'll be over before the contest even begins. I'd only be comfortable with a separate Bahamian fish division.

Catch

Good idea DF2. Hey, since this would span possibly 2 or 3 months, would it be each boat, or angler? Cuz some of us feesh different boats.

All manual here in Oz. Are we eligible to join in too ?

Haven't been out for a couple of months due to wind and weather but tomorrow looks possible for a shot at the queens and hopefully wreckfish.

Does anyone get yellowtail kingfish deep dropping. We regularly get them down to 1000ft. Much better eating from that depth too though they are usually only 5-8kg for some reason. Much bigger ones closer inshore but not deep so far.

Count me in! I'd have to agree with Catch though. We should limit to US waters only. If we do include the Bahamas then have two seperate divisions. Also, remember the new Bahamian laws take effect Jan. limiting you to 20# per boat.

We should plan a meeting early next year to start working out some details. I'll see if I can't drum up some sponserships from up in the Stuart area.

If we do "Tilefish" only tournament. Will it be ok to fish anywhere? I'd rather not do 2 divisions. Atleast not in this tournament.

The biggest tilefish caught on manual or electric will win. It will be hard to moderate how it was caught for now.

A newspaper and measuring tape will be the proof...

Any other suggestions/comments?

Sounds good to me! How many entries can one angler submit? I'd like to see unlimited entries / angler. That way we can see who is catching what. If you catch a bigger one then post that pic and it replaces your smaller entry. If it's limited to one entry then everyone will wait till the end to post.

Longest fish wins?

Agreed. You can enter as many fish as you want but the biggest will be counted towards the prize.

so let me understand the drift here, us Bahamain guys will be excluded because of laws not yet passed (and may never be) and also that we can catch fish that are so much bigger, but we'll not admit to it, we'll do it by having a tile fish only tournament because they are not avaiable in the islands......hmmmmmmm, a deep drop tournament that does not include snowy grouper, misty grouper and warsaws, why bother?

I read quite a few posts on the subject of the new proposed Bahamian catch limits referring to the innocent being punished for the transgressions of the few, I see this cuts both ways, huh?

Dude, you want to put pogies in that contest? Those can be caught in 50' of water, although I agree that the bigger ones are out deep. I've caught them about 4-5 lbs in 250+ fishing for snappers and groupers. But as a contest fish? No. Those are bait or throw-backs. I'll only eat them if I'm hurting.

I think that a true forum tournament has to go by a particular species only. It is much easier to judge and such. We can consider adding warsaw's or something like that, but I thought a tilefish only tournament would be good...

Lets disucss this... i plan to start this tournament Jan 1 or so.

Well why dont you fish our waters .. you dont have to pay ..port charges and you wont get borded by our BDF!!! on the serious note ... why kill fish if your limits will only be 20lbs you can keep ... if the rule does go thru ... most of the groupers you will be catching that are over 20lbs would be put back in the waters dead ... would be a waste .. just for a contest ...!!! I have a idea those of us on the forum ..could register and get a number .which would be used in the photo of the fish caught ... with the date and ..maybe have a witness to sign a forum or something like that .... question on is it only florida waters .. ???

Yep! Just kidding. I'm practicing for my new position on the SAFMC (got to stick it to those who have the most fun)

IslandShark - we all know that the probability of catching a monster in the Islands is a bit higher than over here in the states. With a "World" wide contest such as this those boys in Belize will bring in a 60# Queen and kick all our butts. Got to figure out some way to make it fair for everyone, and provide everyone an equal chance. What you suggesting ?
