Want to do some manual deep dropping with a single big bait. Is a beefy knocker rig the way to go

That depends on how deep were talking
For less than 200' I use a triple swivel rig, varying leader length on desired species. For 200-300 feet I use a L-bar to keep the bait away from the main line while dopping. For more than 300' I use the standard deep drop rig with 2 hooks and longer droppers 8-20". When I do this I use a rig 8' long with the baits spaced so they never touch the swivel, weight, or each other, to keep from being tangled. On this rig I use much bigger hooks then normal, because the bait dosen't swim much anyways, and you'll have a much better hook up ratio. Kyle

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking monster tilefish Now that you can only keep one I'm looking to target the biggest one I can get a hook in

I use 16/0 hooks with two fairly long leaders for the tiles. I can put a smorgasboard of bait on 'em and still get a good hookup ratio.
Since the limit is only one fish, there's not much sense in fishing more than two hooks on a rig.

Yes definetly use nothing less then the 16/0, Try the VMC's I really like their hooks
As far as the bait I like bonita because its tough. I use chunks 1-2" wide and 3-4" long 1 1/2 thick. As far as targeting a bigger fish I'd say bigger bait and bigger hook. Kyle

Hey butch , for big tile fish .. I just use a 5/0 hook ... i`ve tried all sizes of bait ... the big ones will hit a small bait also ... just put a whole squid on the hook .. just hook it once ... it will do the trick ...the small ones will nibble ... you`ll know when a big one hits ... rod just bends to the water .. and hang on ....!!!! my biggest to date is 16lbs ... still looking for my 20lbs .. maybe this weekend i`ll get lucky, going to try with my spinning outfit again ..Later ..Willi

I guess that snowie draggin ya in da rocks did it in. Well at least we got the fish We'll just have to switch gears till she's fixed. Should have a good shot @ some nice groupers North. Hey I left my book w/ my chart and some #'s in your boat console. Will you get it out fer me and stick it in the house so it doesn't get ruined. There are a few coordinates in there I don't want to lose . Have to work the day after xmas. Was hopin the boss wuz gonna cut me some slack, but no luck. We'll hook up soon and get after em, even if its in da river. Later, Butch

When he was on my boat he kept one of my sword leaders and didn't even leave a dollar on the nightstand. Hmmmmm Maybe I'll let him walk home from the 50 next time.
