I am all over this. I am writing letters to everyone. We need more help. We need to recruit people. Other than those of us that browse the fishing forums and go to meetings, most fishermen I talk with have no idea any of this is going on.

This sucks. If we let this continue, one day there will be a fence closing off access to the ocean for recreational anglers. Lets have a big jamborie in front of George Geiger's house.

The system used to propose these regulations and force feed them to us is flawed.
I think we need a total re-organization of the system. Sort of like our flawed government. All proposed legislation should have to go through three entities.
Rereational representatives, commercial reps, and the whinner enviromentalists. The only way anything will pass is with all parties compromising. The current format is nothing but lying good ol boys out for their intrests only.
I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore

I hate to drop another turd in the punch bowl but I got the latest newsletter release fromSAFMC. (y'all really need to sign up for it - it's on their website).

Geiger's grouper & snapper advisory council has recommended that commercials be allowed to possess bottomfish even while transiting MPA areas so long as their gear is stowed. That's like a bank robber being allowed to carry his loot down the street so long as his gun is in his pocket. I mean WTF?

What the f*** is going to be the next clearly pro-commercial bullshit cave-in from the grouper & snapper advisory council? Part of my sales route takes me up into Geiger's home territory, Sebastian FL. I arrange my lunchtimes so I can go into the local tackle stores and shoot the s*** with the owners. As soon as I start on about the bullshit SAFMC snowie and tile regs, I don't even have to mention Geiger's name but the owner's invariably do. To a man they all say, "If Geiger had his way, all recreational fishing would be catch & release. And yet he still says loudly that commercials need to be able to make a living." These are guys in tackle stores from Melbourne to Vero Beach. THese guys all know him and know him well.

I think Geiger should be booted off the SAFMC as a recreational representative when he so clearly, and fraudulently, is mis-representing recreational interests and is clearly representing commercial and eco-fascist interests. Let him rejoin SAFMC as what he truly is, pro-commercial or pro-ecofascist. But Mr. Geiger, PLEASE don't piss on my back and tell me it's rainin'!

I signed up for their newsletter .... but after I had sent Geiger 2 scathing emails. At any rate, I haven't received any newsletter. Maybe they blacklisted me .

Mark, do you know when Gieger's term is up? We should start writing to the person in charge of appointing people about our issues with Gieger.
Got any names?

We could start with Bill Hogarth at NMFS ... his parent organization.

Gaitor is 100% correct in naming Bill Hogarth. Mr. Hogarth is the person we need to send our letters and emails to regarding the actions of SAFMC. He can't act on things unless he's made aware of it.

Fish-n-dude to the rescue! Kenny, you are our inernet sleuth. What is Hogarth's email address? I couldn't find it on the NMFS site.

I can't speak to an email address ... but here is Hogarth's mailing address:

United States Department Of Commerce
National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration
National Marine Fisheries Service
1315 East-West Highway
Silver Spring, MD 20910
The Director

He he ... even looking at the address boggles one's mind as to the layers of buerocratic horse hockey one has to go through to find someone with either a pulse or something other than a flatline brain scan.

Exactly. "...bottom trawls and long lining..." I don't see any mention of "recreational" affects on deepwater sponges and corals. Go after the problem, not the sport.

Not that I agree, but the argument that was used was that anchoring from rec anglers was doing alot of damage . No doubt Trawlers are a far bigger destructive force . Furthermore most can't or won't try to anchor in more than 300'. Nevertheless all of us should when anchoring, drop the hook in the sand on either side of the target structure, and use the appropriate size ball, and the correct amount of rode to minimize damage to underwater habitat. Like I said I don't agree w/ them villafying rec anglers, just trying to clarify the argument as well as encourage proper anchoring techniques. It takes years if not decades to rebuild what an improperly deployed anchor can destroy in a matter of seconds .

Hey butch .. as you know anchoring in very deep water is out of the question ... even at 300ft at a scope of 7 to 1 ... I dont think many boats could store that much .. unless you have a cruise ship! most likely the best way is drifting ... I only anchor in shallow waters and wrecks 40-120ft... can you imagine anchoring in our tile spots ..in 600 plus waters ... thats a lot of rope to pull up ...!!!!My aching back!!!!!!!!

We routinely anchor in 230'. The float ball and ring do all the back breakin work.

Fish-N-Dude and Gaitor6 - perhaps your online sleuthing abilities will still turn up Director Hogarth's email address but meanwhile, is there an email address for the Secretary of Commerce, Director Hogarth's boss? I believe the more emails and letters we can address to the higher-ups the easier it will be for our voice to be heard and possibly drown out the lying bullsh** of the eco-fascists and industrial-commercials.

BTW - I've decided I am going to name the guilty segment of the commercial deepwater bottomfishing industry the "industrial-commercials". I am all in favor of the non-industrial commercial guys who go out there and use the exact same gear we use to deepdrop. They are catchin' 'em up Olde Skool and aren't destroying the bottom habitat nor are they destroying the fishery.

It's the industrial-commercials who are clear-cutting the bottom habitat and causing all of the rest of us to suffer fishery losses and draconian bullshit regs, including the eco-fascists wetdream, MPAs. These industrial-commercials need to be singled out for ridicule and punishment.
