Default hook woes

I am having a hard time figuring out my hook situation. I have been using ']apanese' classic circle hooks of varying sizes and seem to getting alot of misses and false hookups..ie I reel a snapper and he gets off hook at surface...i also get alot of hard bites with no hookup. but when one gets hooked with the circle then he aint getting off.!
I also have some smaller conventional shaped hooks that i tried and got a better bite to hook ratio.
I am considering re rigging with conventional hooks for the next trip. i am not fishing structures so most of the time i am getting single hookups on yellow eyes etc.
any advice?

Just use VMC circles thats all I use. Adjust size according to what your gonna catch.

I use the VMC circles as well.
A good source for those can be found at:

I have found that if I'm loosing fish (particularly on the way up) then I switch to a larger hook. That seems to eliminate the problem. Had problems one day loosing fish (i.e. floaters), switched to one size larger hook and problem solved.

Belize , I have been using hooks by OWNER ... ..#5178-161... 5/0& 6/0 are what I use 90% of the time for all of my fishing...circle hook wide in all sizes .. have not lost a fish yet .. be it a sail , tarpon or any bottom fish ...unless they break me off ... hook is always in the corner of the mouth ... if you are losing fish check to see if the barb is still there .. some times after long use they thin out ... if you are getting a lot of hits and no fish .. probably very small ones ... which you dont want anyway....well thats my 2 cents .. hope you get all the big ones ...Willi
