NEED FEEDBACK
What do you guys think about the performance, durability, and overall quality Of the Kristal 621. Is it beefy enough to pull big grouper. Thanks, Butch

Not sure about the durability. Some don't like them some do. I have a buddy that has had one for about 3 years. No problems with it yet, however he only fished with it maybe 6 - 10 days a year. For those that deep drop more regularly may have a better opinion on durability.
As for power. I personally have pulled up grouper in the 40# range from 1200'. We have also pulled in AJ's in excess of 60#. On the larger fish (such as the AJ's) you have to let the drag work for you or you'll blow the fuse. When the fish is pulling really hard let the drag slip and do not reel. When the drag quits slipping hit the switch. I really like them, but then again I'm not out there everyday either. |

Are you dead set on the rod mount reels? If not this is what I have and love it. Fished almost everyday during the summer. Likes to catch Aj's 35-80 lb's and loves Warsaws to 93. ![]() I would highly recommend it to anyone. Have fished in the islands to 1600',with 15lb's of lead with no problems. Have pulled tripple Queenies from 1350' all 14-17 lbs with no problem. During the Kingfish run I use it Buggin, that way I have a bug reel on both sides of the boat. All I do is put 100 wraps on top of the PP. And you can't beat the price of the reel. www.deepdrop.com Also I have friend that fishes the 621 which is supposed to have the same specs as this reel, but it doesn't. Catching the queens We drop at the same time my reel and his, hit about the same time within 45 seconds you have your fish and are coming up. Usually he hooks 2 then brings it up I always go for 3. In the time it takes me to get the third fish he has already come up a little. By the time I get to the surface he is about 100' behind which tells me my reel is faster and more powerful because I'm pulling 3 fish and hes only pulling 2. So either way they are both good but if I bought another it would be the XL001 which is what I have.

I got 500 yards of the kristal line 130#. They spooled it for me, its real good line execpt it has a large diameter. So on top of the kristal I put 500 yards of 130# tuff line which is alot smaller diameter. I did this because,
1. At 1350' I could see the backing on the spool. 2. The smaller diameter line drags less in the water so it's easier to fish. 3. I wanted more line in case I decided to do something crazy!! As far as other options the reel comes with a swivel base that goes into a rod holder, which is nice because you don't have to mount it permanent like say a Tiger, or Waterman reel. The piece circled is a normal 3 inches, which puts the reel 3" above the gunnel. On the reel I ordered from them, I had them make this piece 5", which puts it up alittle high making it easier for me to fish with. The only down side to this is it puts more pressure on the rod holder. ![]() Kyle

Butch,
I bought the Kristal 651 which is more powerful and has more capacity than the 621. I guess it all depends on what type fishing you're gonna do. If you are going to deep drop in the islands, I would opt for the 651. My 2 cents. |
