Default power pro spectra

anyone using this? I spooled 4000 ft of 130 lb test and found it to be horrible line...it was fraying constantly and leaving yellow fluff everywhere...I had a 200 lb shark on and it nearly frayed the line - i had to dump about 500 ft. also the line cuts into knots so makes weak links..only way to tie knots is by threading the spectra in side hollow dacron line.
my rollers were all clean and spinning and my drop tip in perfect shape...(checked ceramic donut with microscope to make sure no nicks)..so either i got a bad spool or ? my tacke shop has not had good experience with it...capt harrys not selling anymore and switched to cortland black spot super braid...i bought a 200lb roll and beautiful line...no abrasion and holds a knot.

Hi Belize ,, I have been using power-pro line for a year now ... and love the stuff .... I use it on my spinning gear ...great getting tarpon out of the bridge pilings at night ...of course have to change the line after that ! and I deep drop with 50 lb .. with no problem ... I have rollers on my rod ....maybe it was a bad spool... well tight lines ..willi

my task for the last few weeks has been to figure out how to consistently hook the yellow eyes...as i am new to this game still figuring things out...haver been fishing in about 500-600 ft at the bottom of reef drop off as this is where the yellow eyes hang out. I dont know if it is them or soemthng else but we sure seem to be getting alot of nibbles and missed hookups for the amount of fish we catch. maybe this is the way it is. to catch a yellow eye in most cases one needs to be on the reel and ready to hit the switch to hook the fish after a good hit. it is all in the timing. been using 13-o hooks...mustad ultra point - kind of a modified circle hook. tried straight hooks and larger hooks and smaller ones...same thing.
i guess we dont have schools of yellow eyes as no specific structure for them to hang over...i am still dreaming of pulling up 5 at a time but it has only been one one for me so far.
I have been slow drift fishing as cant anchor due to wind direction most of the time. I wonder how much more productive it will be to anchor and bring in the fish by smell. sharks?

I have been using the circle hooks from Owner ..5/0 model 5178-151.. from catching sailfish , AJ`s and golden tiles ... I am sure they will work for yellow eye`s ...it is probably very small fish... I just wait for the rod to bend over .. and reel.. let the fish set the hook .. hope this helps ....willi

I've had good luck with the Power Pro in both green and hi-vis yellow with lines from 30 to 130 pound test.
I also use the uni knot with no need for super glue or any of that crap. The knots hold just fine.
I'm guessing you got a bad spool bro.

Power pro is usually all right, but I prefer the Jerry Brown stuff. VMC makes a spectacular circle hook that probably would be ideal in your situation. 13/0 sounds awwful big, unless grouper are the target. Good Luck

Default PowerPro

PP did have a bad batch about a year ago. Some of the line had weak spots in it and it broke easily. They have since corrected the issue.

PowerPro is on all my reels except for my 4 Dolphin trolling rods. It is excellent line and has almost 100% knot strength if you tie the Palomar to a swivel. No stretch, more capacity, casts great, less water resistance, lasts longer.

I used to have to change mono at least once a month on my charter reels. I have PP that has been on some reels for over a year. I usually only change it out if it gets low on the spool due to a bunch of cut-offs. Once you get used to it you will never go back to mono except for a few situations. I would never bottom fish with mono as it has way too much stretch.

I use PowerPro:
150# on my Kristal XL75 deep drop rod.
30# on Cabo 60 spin for all around and reef
12# on Cabo 40 spin for Yellowtail and misc light reef
65# on Accurate TwinSpin 12's for Sailfish/Dolphin/Tuna
80# on Accurate Platinum Twin Drag 30's for Swords/Marlin/big Shark
80# on Accurate Boss 197XC for jigging.
Accurate Boss 870 XC have Sufix Key Lime 20 lb mono for Dolphin trolling.

I only use mono for tournaments with line class requirements or IGFA rules.

Default Accurate reel

The 197XC or the 270Xc will do fine for Groopahz. Smooth drag and 6:1 gear ratio. Good line capacity. Great for jigging with the butterfly jigs.

197XC holds 250 yds of 50 lb Power pro and slightly less in the 80 pound.

270XC holds 350 yds of 50 pound PP.

I usually just put on some 15 pound mono as a backing and then 250 yds or so of Power Pro. I have never needed any more than that on fish that fight up and down and I can always chas 'em down with the boat.

Lightbulb 270

Whats the drag maxxed out @? Love fishing the 6:1, but haven't found one that can take a prolonged punishment..... Like from the occasional oversized catfish or goliath jewfish. Have crushed trinadads, and toriums and had them rebuilt, only to crush them again. Can't go back to 3.5-1 so there has to be a superior technological solution. Started savin for a 270. Thanks fer da return post.

back to the topic, I've been using power pro for about 6 years. I've tried stren braid, tuff line, and japanese PE line, and more recently Berkely Big Game braid. I found the Big Game to be my new favorite and I'm not going to buy power pro anymore, from now on when I respool with braid it will be Big Game. I find it ties knots much more cleanly, comes in white (I like white braid), and appears to hold up to nicks and scrapes a lot better than power pro.
