Jupiter Tilefish

Finally got some decent conditions during the week and headed out of Jupiter looking for Tiles. Nailed one on the first drop and pretty much got one on the majority of drops including one doubleheader. We finished with 8 fish but not really big ... nothing over 10 lbs. Good tablefare for sure!

Nice fish... Sunday was a great day .. I finally nailed my first tile ... about the same size as the one on your photo ...your right .. best table fair ...can`t wat to get back out there ..thight lines

Thanks Miami ... I'm headed back out in the morning. I'm told I would have bigger fish if I use bigger hooks and bigger bait. I was using 8/0 demon circles so I guess the smaller fish were getting hooked up before the bigger ones could munch da bait.
I'l let you know how it works out.

HI , Gaitor...I dont know ... I have been using 5/0 wide circle hooks and load it with a whole squid ... haven ..t found the big ones yet .. I can see the ocean where i`m working and it looks great ... just wish I can go :lol: had Tile fish for dinner every night ... still have some for the next couple of nights

hope you get the big ones !

What are you baiting up with gaitor. That seems to make a difference. Barracuda, bonito, and butterflied fresh gogs all are good baits for the bigger boys. Interested to hear how it was out there today.

Actually, I was using a smorgasboard of chunked kingfish, bonito, and squid sandwiched in between. Problem was, the hooks were too small to put enough bait on and still allow firm hookups.
I'll stick with the same bait and add 'cuda when i can get one, but will go get some bigger hooks to rig tomorrow.
Went out today and got 12 tiles but nothing exceptional. Beautiful day with only a slight current to begin (1.1 mph) so was able to use less weight. By 1:30pm the winds came around from the southeast and the current increased to almost 3mph which is still reasonable, but I switched to 10 lbs stickweight and could hold bottom easily. Made my two buddies happy to take home some nice fillets to their ladies.
Oh ... could have caught more, but why waste the resource when you have a limit?

Was using a whole squid sandwiched between two fillets of mullet rigged on a 16/0 Mustad Circle.

... BUT AT THE LAST MINUTE SHE STAYED HOME AND WANTED TO SLEEP ! LIFE OF A 15 YEAR OLD !!! ONE THING INTERESTING ... THE TILE FISH HAD A 5 INCH CIGAR MINOW STICKING IN IT`S MOUTH WHEN I BOATED IT ...I DIDNT KNOW THAT THEY ARE FOUND THAT DEEP ... WATER TEMP IS ABOUT 54 DEGREE`S !!! WELL GOING TO TRY AGAIN TODAY ... SEE IF MY DAUGTHER WILL GET ONE TODAY ... THIGHT LINES

WTG! Nice fish Jim. Glad to hear you guys got the conditions gods nod. Lots of guys had a tough weekend producing fish. Shows that weektime fishing is the best.

I'm gonna take my boat in to check the mapping on my motor while the seas are up, but will be back out there as soon as the weather settles.
There are some nice ledges off juno in 280' to 350' which I'll be hitting for grouper etc since the bastages won't let us keep but one tilefish.
Last time on that spot we had an 8/0 hook get straightened so we gotta go back with heavier artillery

Have 16/0's will travel :lol: . Also have some good #'s for some deep wrecks I've been dying to try. What is the mapping, in reference to the motor. I've never heard that term before.

The mapping has to do with the computerized fuel/oil injection ratio at various rpm's. Right now, my 225 DI Evenrude hates to be run slow .... fouls the plugs way too easily and at $10 per plug can get expensive.
Looks pretty much like a wash for this week and the seas are forecast to build again this weekend. We'll get after them though when conditions permit. I want to try and find those fish up by the Loran tower. I don't think they are as molested as the ones off Juno. I'll holler at ya when things get right.

My last boat had an 88 Ficht, that hated to troll. Very fuel efficient and good running at speed but gave me trouble if you idled along for a while.
Sold it in my divorce, and the fella that bought it had a new computer installed on a recall from evinrude. He says it runs great now. Thanks for the reply. Always nice to learn a little something new.
