i dont understand why you just dont go out to the liberty ship in 380 out front of the inlet and catch all the 3-5 lbs vermillions you want, might get lucky and catch a warsaw or a big black grouper...

Use your sonar and crisscross the area. Finding a liberty ship should be very easy. They usually stand 15+ feet tall off of the bottom.

I have a question , since I am new to deepdropping .. when going for groupers or snappers .. do you leave the weight on the bottom ..or do you crank it up a few turns .. for tiles I just drag the weight ... thanks |

When I fish recreationally for "shallow water groupers" and by that I mean gags, reds, and scamps in <350', I fish a slip lead rig. That would be....egg sinker sliding on line, barrel swivel, 6' mono leader, snelled jap hook. Hook size and leader size will depend on bait size, which depends on fish species and size.
When fishing for "deep" groupers commercially, like snowies and yellow edge, you could do like the above, but usually it'd be 10 or 12 hooks all on twisted droppers about 1' long with jap hooks, and a big ass window weight at the bottom. Having snowies float your gear is awesome. In the first rig, you will hear different arguments. Some say that a lead right on the bottom is best because it's not bouncing around scaring the fish. Others say that you're just asking to get your ass kicked by keeping your lead on the bottom and you should bring it up 10 cranks. The grouper will come up and get the bait. I've done well both ways, but you'll get broken off a lot less with the lead up off the bottom 10 cranks (which is about 10' on a high speed Penn 4/0 aka 113H). I say that it depends on how fired up the fish are. Often you'll have to start just about 2 cranks off the bottom (which is what I tell the clients on my charters), and once they get more active you can fish 10 or even higher off the bottom. This does require multiple rods so you can keep baits down there to keep them fired up. On the second rig we'd bring the window weight just a couple feet off the bottom and wait for the bandit gear to double over. Once you get one on you bring it up a few feet so he doesn't get you in the bottom, and then wait for his buddies to load up. Then you flip the light switch, wait about a minute or so, and then start making money. |

thank`s Boboe, that how I figured it ... I usually do two cranks and see how it goes .. I usually dont get hung up much ... on my weigth I use lighter line so not to lose the whole rig ... I use a 3 hook rig so far it has been working ... as for the liberty ship .. haven`t found it yet .. I am getting a better depht finder first ...it is in 380 ft of water and comes up 100+ so once I find it should be able to get some fish off of it ... not many people fish it from what I have heard from the commercial bait guy`s .. they have been a lot of help in me finding fish
just looking to get my first snowy and warsaw (manually) I like a challange

You want a manual warsaw? Throw your 4/0 overboard. Get a 9/0, 10/0, or 12/0. Put it on an unbending meat stick rod. Put your bait 30' off the bottom and use 200# main and 300# leader. Use the biggest damn jap hook you can find. Fish 5-10 lbs of bait. Crank your drag until you can't make it any tighter. Then beat it down some more. Wait. Wait some more. Don't be an idiot and even think you can fight him. Leave the rod in the holder and drive off. Don't firewall it because you'll break him off. Once you drive 100'-200' off and he's still on there, back the drag off some and fight him out of the rod holder. You want to have enough drag to just hold him, but so that he can take 10-50' of line when he needs to. He will blow up 40' or more from the boat. Back up to him and take photos. Sink a half dozen gaffs in his mouth and don't pop the bladder. You and a half dozen of your nearest and dearest haul him over the rail.
Beat the fish with a baseball bat for an hour to tenderize. Cook. Throw out the fish because a big warsaw isn't very good at all. |

Thanks miamiangler1,
I've been able to find a few around our area. Mostly small ones 3# - 5#. Have caught a couple in the mid teens. Just curious about the coathanger thing because like you said them fish will not come up off the bottom. I've been using two weights, one on the main line and one on the end of the rig. That seems to help, but even that doesn't seem to work when the current is really cranking. |

This is were I get all my (commercial tackle from)
Here is a link that shows an L-bar. I use the heavy duty for catching AJ's It allows me to drop the bait(live) alot faster. The medium or light will suit your needs just fine. http://www.snlcorp.com/Webpages/bottomfishing.htm |

Well I have been useing 32oz to stay on the bottom ... this weekend was a litttle difficult with the wind from the East ... current and waves .. I like it when it is flat calm .. but that is not always possible ....since I have a small boat my drift rate is not too bad ... but I am usually backing into the current ... watching my line so it is strait behind my boat and no tension on the rod tip ... that way I know I am on the bottom in the mud ... its like live bait trolling in bumping in gear and out ...in reverse...I just use One weight on the bottom ... also I use 50lbs power-pro...the smaller diameter line the lighter the weight ... |

Miamiangler1 - If you catch a 20 lb warsaw, I hope you catch him in shallow water. They often do come into shallow water when young. We used to have a private wreck that had one about 10-15 lbs on it in 70' of water. We released him 3x in the summer of 2004. Killing a warsaw of that size is pretty damn unethical unless he's blown up badly. He's just a baby.

Well it looks like my Sat is a wash ... storms and seas 4-8ft ..well that my be true for the warsaw .. but I probably have a better chance on winning the lottery then catching one anyway ... finally got my new depth finder .. so I will be installing it tomorrow and hit the nine mile humps next weekend..got my new sword charts  since we only can catch one tile now ... going to try for some rosies and barrelfish and what ever else is out there in deeper waters ..just filled my 6/0 with 500yards of power-pro.. hope that is enough :?: |
