NICE! already a pro. and only 5 miles out, can't beat that.Do you have alot of boats fishing around you? Where I fish,"east BFE" there's nobody in sight except the occasional freighter.

That sounds like a likley culprit. Bagged one in feb, 93 lbs. He had three leaders hanging out of his mouth and a 16/0 Circle hook with the remains of a blue runner bridled in his gut. Had drifted barely off the wreck, fishing a live horse gog knocker style. Sheer luck and good boat work and 20 mins later he blew up and floated to the surface. Biggest hand crank grouper for me ever. I have read about the grouper fishing around the rigs Boboe, would like to try it. Any recommendations on a good long range boat to charter for a trip like that. Also what time of the year is best for the big boys in the gulf.
Thanks, DIRTYFOOT2

Well, my guess would be giant tile, because I was fishing in the tile mud slick.Unless of course it was the notorious warsaw just doing a little grocery shopping  Either way, got the spot marked and will return again.

Poolman, you never did say how deep you were when you got freight train'd.
Regarding grouper on rigs, I don't like it. I like to fish groupers over natural bottom. Adjacent to rigs, or over cutoff rigs, you'll get your ass handed to you by little fish. There's just too much crap for them to get you into. Even small ones will trash your gear from abrasion. Be prepared to drive off a lot to pull them away. I don't like doing that unless it's just a huge fish. Fishing gags, scamps, reds, and the occasional yellow edge or snowy on natural bottom is much easier, and usually more productive. The only things I like to fish next to rigs are jacks and snappers. You'll find more grouper on rocks--and a lot more CATCHABLE ones too ![]() The boat I ran the deck on for 4 years is called the "No Alibi" and fishes out of Destin, FL. It runs private charters, 6 passengers max. I can give you the owner-captain's number if you want. |

That would be great. Have a timeshare condo in pompano, and one of the places I can trade to get is in destin. Would like to get up there sometime next year for a week. What is your recommendation for the best time of year to sample the bottom fishing True reds and large groupers.
Thanks again, Butch

Boboe,I was in 590,with mud on the bottom. And there wasn't any bottom nearby.as far as I could see on the machine anyway. Thinkin'bout playin' a little hooky in the morn, seein' how it looks like my only fishin' window. Taking my son and nephew,"no school" gonna try for mangos and gags, but with a west wind I'll probably head deep. And I'll definetly try that spot again with my newly bought 16/0 circle hooks.Honestly, I hope they are just big ol' prarie dogs.I like them better than a misty or warsaw.

Willi,if that's the one with the almost record size queen, then the article will tell you they were fishing in your backyard. First you GOTTA upgrade the bottom machine, then you'll find the structure in 7-750 where they be.Til then you're huntin for a needle in a haystack.Unless you can get somebody down at cap harrys to give up #'s.I know they're in shallower as well,3-450,you just gotta find em.Always keep an eye on the machine for any depth change then return and float over it for a better look. That's how I'm finding all kinds of stuff.

I know I am thinking of adding another depth finder .. I was looking at the lorance 107 ... 1000watts and goes to 2500ft... I have been using my matrix12 .. the GPS in it has a grid .. so thats how I have been doing it ... and then putting the numbers in to my garmin Gps to get right on top of my spots ... I was at Captain Harry`s .. and talking to one of the guy`s that works in the back in parts ... but he wont give out #`s ... but said they could be caught in 250 ft here ... which is a 5min run on a flat day for me ... I am ready to get my arm sore again this weekend ... hope you catch some big one`s .. tight lines...Willi
