Default Where to start?

Well, I just got my Peterson Bottom reel ready to go. Have about 1800' of 200# dacron. I dont have any specific waypoints to go try it out. What depth do you reccomend trying out first? Here in PR, the drop off is just 1-2 miles off the coast. Goes to over 1000' quickly. I can get to 2k easily. There are some humps and sea mounts that come up to 200'. The sides are 700-900 feet. So a lot of deep water, seamounts and lots of water to cover. Got the gear, just not sure where would be a good place to start to find caribbean deep drop fish. What am I expecting? Queen snapper?

Thanks.

to make omlets you have to break eggs.....just get out there and start dropping!

in an area you are not familiar with make sure you record each set of drops on a gps, depth and what you catch in that location. Keep moving deeper or shallower until you locate fish and pretty soon you will have recorded a good picture of where to go and where not to go.

there is no short cut, just get out there !

good luck, should be lots to catch around PR

Default went out last night

Got out last night, just off the coast. Tried in 400, 600, 800 and 1200. Basically tried looking for sharp bottom contours, etc. Ended up with a blackfin snapper, and two small sharks. They both looked like they had yellow eyes. They were caught on about 1200' of water. Will keep trying more places.

The glow sticks imploded in 400'. Need to get a better light.

THANKS.

thats the idea, keep trying new spots, leave out the ones that didnt produce so you do not waste time going back to them.

buy lights from lindgren-pitman or kristal fishing they will go as deep as you like. forget about the chemical sticks

Thats exactly the plan. I just got a stiffer arm for the bottom reel and a new switch. Will be going out again soon. FYI. I got 3 different reels for this rig. I basically drop to the bottom, attach a longline snap to the line with a buoy, then attach another snap swivel to the remaining line and reel and toss them both overboard. I do this with three reels. In 15 minutes, I retrieve all three reels.

Im been coached by a local commercial fisherman that has done this for years. He is not sharing the spots, but its teaching me some of the techniques they use. His catches are amazing as far as the variety of fish and sizes. Anything from tuna, sharks, groupers and snappers, they catch with this method. The peterson reel is a powerful setup for sure.

I wish I could post a picture of how it works. Basically, you attach a snap swivel from a buoy to the line once the weight hits bottom. We wrap the line 6 times around the snap swivel and then close it. This one buoy fishes for you. Then, we let about 10-15 feet of line and remove the reel. The reel has a small hole on its side. Through this hole, we run a snap swivel attached to a buoy. We also run the the line coming off the reel by the swivel and then close it. Now, the reel and remaining line are floating of the second buoy. We let this float for about 20 minutes and then bring the reel in and retrieve the line in. Hope is more clear now..

So the line goes from the bottom, up to the surface where there's a buoy, then across the surface to another buoy. You've got a setup like the crabbers have, so that they can throw a grappling hook between the two buoys and get the line in between, thus retreiving their gear. Correct or no?

Hey DeepPR,
I think I understand what you are doing and it seems like a great way to fish more than one line with the same reel. But, I don't understand what the advantage is of having more than one buoy. Why not just tie the line and spool off to a single buoy? I'm making another spool for my homebuilt "Peterson" bandit reel and will try your system here in the Bahamas. Thanks for the idea.

You basically have two buoys so that one keeps the line going to the bottom with some tension, while the other buoy keeps the remaining line/reel floating without any effort. The combine buoyancy is great. Im not sure that I would do it with just one buoy. Another reason to have two is that when you are ready to retrieve, its easier to get the reel into the machine all connected without the line pressure. The first buoy takes care of that.

Boboe, I dont throw a grappling hook at all. I basically approach the last buoy(the one with the reel), attach the reel to the machine, run the line thru the pulley and retrieve until the next buoy clip, remove that one and then reel the entire line (hopefully full of fish)...

There is not a restriction here on hook quantity, but I have one of my rigs with 20 10/0 hooks. Those come handy if you find a hot spot. Most of my rigs are 5-10 hooks.
