Default Sharks and squid lights

I found my misty banks but am batting 7 groupers for 2 lost rigs. Both times I lost all as soon as ball hit the bottom. I have come to the conclusion that sharks are eating my $50 l&p squid lights - why not? it looks like a squid!

So am wondering if just a cheapo white strobe would be just as effective,,,seems like people have been catching deep water fish with strobes a long time before the pulsating squid light was invented.

Anyhow I caught the pesky shark or one of them...unfortunately he didnt have my light in his his belly...

belize, there is fairly inexpensive deep drop light that is avaialbale almost anywhere. Its shaped like an ice cream cone and uses a single AA battery. Its a white light and has an O ring seal at the top. Its around 4-5inches long. They sell for around $4.00. I have always used them and never had problems with them.
Here in Jamaica we have lots of sharks as well. To combat the problem of losing all the gear I tie my mainline with single strand wire and three way swivels. This stops the shark from cutting off the entire trap. I tie my hooks with mono and hoepfully when the shark takes a fish he just bites through the mono and at the worst we lose the fish and one hook.

The duralights will work fine. Stranded wire for the mainline is a good idea. I can relate to losing tackle, last trip we lost 3 rigs in 3 drops, all to sharks

Try keeping the light at least 20 ft or more from bait . it seems to really cut down on sharks. fish will find bait.

good idea. i switched to wire with mono leaders. have had a few rigs come up missing hooks so assume there are a few sharks around. have also had some good bites on my wire. so the concept is working...i clip a lite or two in the middle of rig.
I also put on a 35 ft bimini twist as an indicator with about 6 in of speargun rubber tubing as shock absorber for screwups.

That's a good idea using a twist as an indicator. I've just been tying a rubber band at about 10 feet but sometimes it slides - tooclose for comfort.

From everything I have ever heard sharks feed strictly by smell and do not react to strictly visual impulse.

One the reasons guys use big jigs for manual deep dropping is specifically to discourage shark hits.

I am not speaking from experiance but regurgating things I have repetedly heard.
