Default Fish ID from the deep dropping photos page

Ok, I'm clueless as to what these fish are. Who's got the info?

these are small scrombrods (scrombroids?) I posted the pic last year, I'll post another one I have of a still live example.

someone caught 2 over 16 lbs in the deep drop tournament last Saturday. Ugly as sin but good to eat, came from about 1800'

That's kinda what I thought they were. Maybe saying "I'm clueless" was a bit of an overstatement. I had my guess, anyway.

I saw a show a year or two ago with guys fishing non-electric gear off Bimini and catching "Scombrops," if I correctly remember the name used. I remember them being long, gray/black, large scaled, toothy, and ugly as hell. I think they also caught a wreckfish on that trip too. What can you tell me about them? They looked like a grouper, for the most part. I think theirs was in about 2000' of water.

I can not say that I know anything specific about these guys, the little ones can be caught as shallow as 800' and I know the bigger ones come as deep as 2000+

I do remember it took quite a bit of examination to match up the small ones to a big one, they seem to morph a bit as they get older. We were into quite an arguement, had to count spines, teeth rows, fins etc to finally decide we were looking at the same species.

A friend of mine caught an oil fish 48# in about 600' down in conception island, Bahamas. I should post that pic too.

Snake mackereal also are caught in the Bahamas but no reports lately. Its even uglier than the scrombrod.

There is a good pic of a large scrombrod on page 4 of the deep drop gallery, incorrectly tagged as a pic of a wreckfish.

Thanks for the info guys. A friend of mine caught an oilfish when swordfishing off of the Florida panhandle in about 1200' of water.

And snake mackerel? Never heard of such a thing. I have had the unfortunate experience of catching "sail cudas" aka Lancetfish. Pretty wild looking things. Caught them swordfishing in about 5000'.
