Default Tilefish Help??

Several times I stopped tuna fishing to bottom fish for tiles in the canyons off of Montauk Point. I know of some guys who catch them but really have no experience with tilefish. Tried a few different hook sizes, different baits and different time of day. I read some tips about tiles but most reports were about fishing down south. I was wondering if there were different techniques to fishing up here. What depth am I looking for, bait, hooks, lghtsticks?

Any help would be appreciated.

Default Tilefish

Here in the Keys the Tilefish are most abundant in 550-650 feet. I ALWAYS catch more fish on the top of humps. If I find a drop-off I will drift across the top of it and hook Tiles. If I drift the slope or bottom of the hump I rarely find fish. Squid is the best bait.

I use a 5/0 Circle hook and 100 pound mono three hook rigs all crimped and 3 way swiveled. Use the water activated strobe lights. You can get them at Offshore Angler for $5.00 each. sometimes I put one on the snap at the top and one at the snap on the bottom of the rig with the weight.

Tilefish prefer muddy soft bottom.

try light sticks from LP i have sent them to 1400 ft with out a problem. squid work best i save the 1s that the swords wack up they are thicker meat than the little 6 incch. but anything you have will get eaten the tougher the better.

Why not fish with some stinky, bloody ol bonito then? Nothing's harder to tear off the hook than bonito!

When im in the Hudson and drop down I use 11/0 Mustad circle hooks (the same ones I use for tuna). I have a reel spooled up with spectra and a 50 foot top shot of mono that I tie a droper loop on the bottom and 2 to 4 loops up the line and just put the hooks on that. I like to use whole squid and butterfish chunks for the bait.

I finally got back out there after all the bad weather and events that came up. We did a little tile fishing during the day about an hour and got four. . "Fairly small but they were tilefish.
