I live near Miami and always run to the Bahamas to deep drop. I've always assumed there is nothing near me in Florida. Is this true? or should I give it a try locally . . . if so, where :?:

the only way to get spots off here is either to go really deep , such as 50 line and look for big ledges , off of fowey and a little farther north. but for any spots shallower than 600 ft either find a really really good freind to give u numbers, or try wrecks in the 200 depths and try to mark snappers , you wont get anyting like snowys or mitsys groupers , but sometimes warsaws, you will probabily get vermilions, blackins , and ocassionly yellow eye snapper, and in the sand off the wreck tile fish, but for the reel treasure you will have to search for wrecks in 300-600 by putting your sounder on bottom lock, even if you do find a spot it probabily wont be as good as the bahams , and also if one spot doesnt produce try another , they dont always bite.

Hey docks
I've been dropping around here for about 2 yrs now, and it's hit or miss. Some days are real good and some I don't even want to talk about them. I've caught everything from yelloweyes to tilefish. I've found out that the real secret is the current, to much and its real hard to stay on the bottom, slack and the ffish don't bite. sometimes it's a little frustrating. Out at the 50 line I caught a 25 lb barrelfish, i thought it was a real nice grouper, the current rips out there.. Like wack said you just have to search and try here and there. I have caught snoweys around here but they are not usually very big, the commercial guys do deep drop and target the snappers. good luck and let us know how you do. dro |

There is a big difference between South Florida and the Bahamas! It's much more challenging to deep drop here. First, you need to spend a lot more time locating fish and then you have to be able to drop right on their heads. Sometimes when I drop for vermillions the drop has to be right on target if you are just a few feet off you come back empty. It's like target shooting and that's the fun part.
