Hi guys, I live on the southern coast of Portugal, just next to the border with spain. Most of our fishing is trolling or rough ground fishing in shallow water. We have some very deep water not far offshore, and a few good almost vertical dropoffs from 300ft - 1200ft, further offshore the depth is about 3000ft.
We've never tried deep droppping, and to be honest we have no idea whats likely to be down there, I'm guessing six gill shark, grouper and who knows?
We can't afford to invest yet in electric reels until we know that the technique is going to work, so are going to load up some 50lb outfits with braid and crank it in the hard way. Maybe drift the edge of the canyon along the dropoff.
Was curious as to what end tackle I should be trying, do you use multiple hooks, single hooks and a long leader, dead fish baits or squid. How about jigging some big lead heads? I've bought a couple of deep water strobe lights, and was going to make up a few rigs to try, any help or advice would be very greatfully received.
Gonna start a similar thread on the swordfishing forum because we've never tried that either...
Many thanks - Bob
