What is the min power/model sounder that will allow me to mark bottom fish in water up to 1000ft deep?? My current 350 watt lowrance with 20 degree 200khz ducer will only mark fish out to around 250 ft. Looking at the 600 watt furuno. Will it mark tiles with a transom ducer, which one? other advice appreciated.

Minimum 1000watt and even then with a thruhull, depends on water Quality and current! If it dosent cost 2 to 3 grand its probably not going to be strong enough.

First off, you are running a 200MHZ wide beam ducer. That freq is for shallow water less than 200' only.
You need to be looking at a 50MHZ low frequency ducer with a narrow beam width for the deeper water. If you want to "mark" fish over 1000', you need a "true" 1000 watt machine like the furuno BBF3 or equivalent. Big money machine but well worth it if you want to bounce em' in 1000+ feet, otherwise you are dancing in the dark hoping to get lucky. I don't think you will actually mark any tile fish as they hide in thier mud holes and ambush thier prey. We just look for a higher resolution picture for bottom releif and drop on what looks "fishy". We rarely mark the air bladders on fish in those depths. Good luck.

I never use anything less than a 2kw ducer . I have found that it's cheaper and actually better to go with a 200mhz No question the 50mhz works better on a 1kw but the 2kw allows the 200mhz to blast thru the depths and return a great pic even at 2500ft and saves about 1/2 the cost. furuno 1100 or the old 292 machines are workhorses for this. Remember you'll need a thru hull and a fairing block around the ducer for best results and careful placement on the bottom away from bubbles, etc.

My 600w furuno and my mates 600w koden will both show schools of fish in 1000ft on 50kz. My usefull depth doubled when I changed to a b260 transducer. Another mate has a 1000w furuno 585 with a b260 and it shows individual fish at 1000ft, which we then caught, nice barcod - groupers - all 8 to 12 kg.
I am fascinated with skindr approach to more power rather than low frequency. 200kz has much less turbulence noise problems than 50, does this let you track deep bottom at speed better as I have to slow down when changing freq around the 600ft mark ? |

In answer to the ques. about loss of signal at speed . My vessel is a 20kt.deep vee cruiser. When I lived in Miami I consistantly marked bottom from Haulover inlet to Walker's and Bimini , showing bottom and structure down to 3000ft. I've since dropped on many of these spots with varied success. Additionally, I have a captain who is a commercial fisherman as well and we often find small pieces of known wrecks up to a mile away from the main known site. These are seen while cruising to or away from the waypoint. By the way, they are usually productive and we keep these spots to ourselves ! So a 2 or even 3kw ducer will power thru to the bottom even at speed.

For comparison...the first picture is from furuno 585 1kw ,external transducer b258,in the best hot spot of Tirrenian sea called "Banco di S.Lucia"(deep in meters)....
the second in the same place with furuno 295 3kw,internal transducer 28hz.... Last edited by bacioch; 10-17-2009 at 04:07 AM.. |

I got this furuno this year,I had a 3kw koden chromoscope on the last boat, dual freq 28 and 50.You could see the bottom anywhere.I was skeptical about how the salesman was trying to tell me this new furuno was as good as what i had,I about laughed in his face.I must say after using it the guy was right,it's a great machine.Mine is 1kw with the big flush mount airmar transducer.

(furuno) is the best bottom machine out there. Even though I have had another machine that kicked ass.. Simrad and JRC (Japanes Radio Company) are also good machines.
