Default Haulover/Miami Deep Drop Question

Hi all, I'm new to the forum but I have been lurker here and there for a while.

I normally leave from the Key Biscayne area but today I figured I would run north off the Haulover Reef and fish some areas I have not been tried in a long time.

After catching some bait we headed out to a ridge in about 1,000 feet of water that has produced some tuna and dolphin during this time of year. We setup shop and boated on nice dolphin. We raised a very large sailfish but we didn't get the hook-up.

A friend of mine reported some mixed sargasm and frigate birds working another few miles NE of us (an are called the 9 Mile Humps) and we headed out. We found a nice school of dolphin working the area that had some nice 8-10 lbs mixed in which we were sight casting to with yellow jigs and pilchards.

While drifting and hosing down the boat I was carefully watching the bottom sounder to get a feel for the depth I was in and it appears I marked some sort of a structure/wreck in approximately 900 feet of water. The various depth readings I took suggested that the depths of these humps varied from 920 feet at the base and rose to the 820 feet level before falling again. I noticed some intermittent "fish" like readings at times within 100 feet of the bottom but I am uncertain.

Here is my question: Is anyone familiar with this area? It is a pretty straight shot out of Haulover Inlet, maybe a touch north. Most importantly, has anyone deep dropped this general area? Any ideas of what I maybe in for out there?

I deep drop quite a bit but generally in Bimini and when I have done it off Miami it tends to be shallower drops in the 400-600 foot range. I am a bit of a one trick pony locally and usually kite fish the reefs or some of the channels in the bay.

Wow sounds like a good one, I hoped you marked it, I would love to drop on something like that.

Oh yes, I am quick on the MOB button.

I marked a pair of base and peak formations as well as the structure.

I am going to drop it next Sat/Sun pending weather of course and will report back.

I marked fish on the backside of the hump towards the deeper water, call it 900 feet.

Any chance of a bigger tile being down there?

When I have caught tilefish off Miami it has been in spots I have in about 400-600 feet of water about due East of the Fowey Light and Ultra Freeze wrecks.

I am thinking of making a Haulover a deep drop weekend next Saturday. I will try this area and a few stops on the way out and in. I am not familiar with this area (for dropping) so every drop will be somewhat blind.

Any tips or suggestions?

Most of my deeps out there are blind drops ... rosies are common . but good eating ... just a pain to clean ...still looking for barrel fish out there but heard they are on the back side of the humps .. might try a little deeper east ... the tiles you are getting are they gray`s .... ?..I`ve dropped on Nine mile ... so far just rosies .. but if you get away from the humps maybe you might find one ... so long you find mud .. you can be on target ! happy hunting !

you are correct... The tiles of Key Biscayne have been grays... I have yet to find golds off Miami, though admittedly I haven't hunted too much.

I am hoping if I take a look at some deeper spots I can have some luck! If I can find some mud away from the humps in 800 feet or so maybe I'll get lucky.

I will report back.

UPDATE...
Well, I didn't get anything. Current was ripping strong to the North.... We did have an 8 foot Mako shark follow us up from the depths and he circled out boat for a good 20 minutes. He was very interested in our drift anchor.

We moved into the reef for the afternoon and caught a sailfish, nice blackfin and a very nice kingfish.

With the gear we had we'd be off Cape Hatteras right now...
