Default electric reels, newbie question...

Howdy ho-deepdroppers...

I had a bit of a read through the forum on electric reels and it seems like alot of people go the Kristals, they look overkill for the size of quarry i'll be chasing so....

i was looking at the Shimano DENDOU MARU 4000HP and Daiwa Tanacom Bull TB 1000 reels for fishing in up to 1600ft of water.

Having a hard time deciding between the two so i thought i would ask for people's opinions on these reels... or any others reels anyone thinks are worth considering

i'm only interested in electric reels (bases are covered on the manual wind front)

thx

It's just my opinion, so take it with a sack of salt. But I think that the criteria you need to keep in mind are
-what size fish are you going for?
-how much weight will you be using to deepdrop?
-how deep will you be deepdropping? (1600ft, you said?)

I have heard great things about the new Daiwas but I have also seen the Kristals in action. They're damn near bulletproof. Maybe one of the smaller Kristals would fit the bill, perhaps the 621?

I know an Ozzie who fishes in the NW portion of your country. It's all "shallow" water up there so you must be deepdropping off the southern coast of Oz, right? What kind of critters are you going for down there?

Good luck in your hunt.

Hi Catch--all,

Fish species include Blue-eye trevalla (average 5~10lb), hapuka (20~40lb)...

Sinker sizes are 1.5~3lb.

Water depths 1600ft MAX.

even the 621 is overkill i would've thought for my fishing...?

Yeah i'll be fishing southern waters out at the continental shelf (Off Portland-Victoria if you want to google tha area )

Actually, if some of the fish you are going after are in the 20-40 lb range, then the 621 would do nicely. Also, it has a good retrieval rate so that means you won't be falling asleep when you are hauling back from 1600 foot.

621 sounds like the ticket, what I love about the Kristals is the low current draw, they are very easy on your batteries and charging system while still have plenty of torque

good to see you over on this board aok47!

I'm new at this too, but this does not seem like enough weight for 1600 ft. Especially if there is a current

I'd fish a 5#+ sash weight for that depth. Hell, I've fished with a 10# sash weight when commercial fishing in 600' for snowies.

...due to the large distance you need to travel to the fishing grounds (~30nm) and the fact we are in the southern ocean (can get very nasty very quickly) I only venture out in ideal conditions which in turn helps minimise size of sinker. I haven't encountered much current out there...

Howdy Alan!

Bo I tend to disagree 65# works for me ... just depends how big the fish get down under ... pulled up a 9ft grey reef from 1000ft manually with it !

small dia= less weight... I hit 1200+ with 3 # weight

Yeah, less weight needed, but also you've got less ass to get him away from the reef structure. I've caught 200#+ sharks on 30# mono. That isn't saying anything though, because sharks aren't bad about taking you into the shit like groupers, jacks, and even large snappers do.
