Marco,

Welcome to the SFC fishing forum.

Thanks for sharing some of you nice fishing photos with us. It is so cool to have mountainous terrain as your backdrop for fishing scenes, along with the variety of fish.

It looks like you are dialed into the right style of fishing in Polynesia: deep drop and spear fishing to balance out the mix.

Here in south Florida, there is some amount of deep drop fishing potential where vermillion snapper are within easy reach, in deeper water there are rosies, grey and golden tiles, snowie groupers, some occasional pomphrets and the ever present odd ball fish. In addition, the targeting of swordfish on the bottom during the daytime hours has fully awakened to the recreational fishing community; or at least those with electrical reels. But there are a few select die hards, who's code of fishing bounds them to deep drop fishing by manual methods.

Only a few miles away from Florida there is the 600 plus, Islands of the Bahamas. Here the deep drop really kicks up a notch due to the vast amount of contours and the relatively sparse amount of bottom fishing pressure below 100 meters. The Bahamas has always been a Mecca for a diverse species of fish encountered while bottom fishing. Popular species of fish encountered in the deeper realms are: Yelloweye, Button, Black, Silk, Green and Queen snappers. Mystie groupers are also regularly caught but you probably need to have your locations carefuly picked out. Margate, Amber and Black Jacks are also commonly encountered along with occasionally hooking up with an undesired shark. But mostly the sharks will simply take the back half of your largest fish and sometimes eat your weight and/or take your entire chicken rig. Recently, the Bahamas government has restricted the harvesting of billfish, including the popularly harvested swordfish, as completely no take for recreational purposes. But there are provisions to take billfish with properly endorsed fishing tournaments, where species and quantities may be altered by exempted official approval. Spearfishing for billfish is not allowed in the U.S. and even trigger operated spearguns are not permitted in the Bahamas. So even if you could harvest certain species, you would be hard pressed to load up multiple rubber bands with one pull of a Hawaiian sling.

BTW - Do you manufacture your own bands from basic materials. I noticed the large number of bands that you use for your pelagic gun in the photo. That many bands would break the bank here, if you had to by them retail from the dive shops once a season. Well actually, we spend a lot more in gas to go fishing with rod & reel offshore. But I think you understand my inquiry.

There are a few spearfishing clubs in Florida, that spearfish by various means and for various species. Check out spearboard.com

How about this Warsaw grouper caught on the Gulf side of Florida:

That is the Head Hunter from that forum but you will find more interesting spearfishing photos there. He got that fish in 425 FSW, technical diving: it was eat or get eaten.

Welcome to the forum mate.
