Whiteout - online fishing sites are a great way to help each other out, especially SFC. Share general info online yes, but not to the point that we hold someone by the hand and lead him to your spots so they can fish them out with little effort. Exact, specific info can be shared offline by PM or email. Its the same thing as getting onto a hot fishing bite while offshore then calling your friend on the VHF and telling him to call your cell.

Kyle - I can understand your point but we may have to "agree to disagree" on this one.

Allow me to explain.
1) SAFMC took us recs from 5 Golden Tiles down to only 1 GT per person, an 80% reduction. Yet SAFMC's own best science called for only a 36% reduction, which means we should be at 3 GT's p/p.
2) SAFMC regs do not prohibit culling or high-grading GT's or Snowies, no matter how many you catch. It is not "one and you're done."
3) The policy I've evolved on my boat is that we cull our Golden Tiles but only to a maximum of 3 Golden Tiles per person - with 1 Golden Tile kept and the smallest 2 released. Most days we stop way before the 3 tile cull limit anyway.

With the commercial bottomfishing industry taking 96% of the Tile and Snowie fishery, no amount of culling while we recs are fishing will make a dent. So that's why I don't feel I'm doing anything wrong culling my Tiles.

Harry & Kyle - in case you didn't know this, I used to work in the comercial fishing industry. Prior to that I sold maintenance products to the commercial industry for 13 years. I've seen the industry from the inside out. It's not pretty. Having said that, I am in favor of family-level, sustainable bottomfishing, including using bandit gear and rod & reel. What I have a big problem with is bottom longlining and other destructive methods of commercial bottomfishing. See my earlier pic - is that what we want to see offshore?

I knew when I posted this thread it was going to see some lively debate. But I also said right off the bat that I am not perfect. I do not expect everyone to agree with me.
