Default Lauderdale monster grouper

Surprised to find this guy out in a spot off PE on Saturday.* By far the biggest grouper I have pulled out of these waters. Can anyone give a definite identification of it?

Congrats!

If the second dorsal spine is much taller than the rest, and the body is a uniform mottled brown... then it's a Warsaw. (most likely)

If there are 6 or 7 faint vertical stripes on the body, then it's a Misty. (more common in the Bahamas than FL)

That's no warsaw. When warsaws are that size, they're pollywog shaped. They're really, really fat and short. That fish is far too streamlined.

Here's a warsaw of roughly the same size as the fish in the photo. Its gut would be bigger if my hand weren't holding it in.

Most importantly, notice the difference in TAIL SHAPE! That may be a wreckfish in the above photo.

Need a better photo... but I'm still going with Warsaw.

Definitely not a wreckfish.

Yes, MY photo is a warsaw, but the original one in the thread isn't. The tail is all wrong, as is the body shape. How in the hell can you see the spines on the fish in the original post? They aren't visible.

Wreckfish are illegal for recs to keep. Therefore, it is not.

Besides, wreckfish do not have a forked tail either.

Wreckfish are legal to keep in Virginia. Why are they illegal down there?

Well, the Confederate States can't keep 'em. (Virginia excluded)

From SAFMC:

Wreckfish
(For areas three-200 miles off the coasts of NC, SC, GA, and East Florida)
No recreational harvest allowed. Individual Transfer Quota (ITQ) in place. No one other than shareholders or their designees may possess wreckfish. Spawning season closure: Janurary 15 through April 15.

Yep, looks like a Warsaw to me. I catch 'em up here a few times a year.

The wreckfish deal was yet another "favor" that SAFMC Chairman George Geiger is doing for the commerical fishing industry during his Reign Of Terror at SAFMC.

Catch

Definitely a wreckfish. I bet you caught it in water deeper than 1000 feet.

Looks like a bass groper [ wreckfish ] to me. I have caught them that size in 700 ft but usually deeper. But if wreckfish are illegal to keep where you fish it is almost certainly a "mixed fillets" .
