anybody know WTF this one is
It has an interesting serrated feature near his tail. Almost like a blue runner but much pointier and sharper . There is a better shot @ the bottom of the post.and just for fun name the three types of snapper in this shot:BMC4-13-08 015.jpg I heard so many different names for this group of similiar looking snappers . Just looking for a consensus of identification. All fish were caught right out front of BMC from 600-1,000' of water.DF2

Butch,
The jack looks exactly like a trevally but we all know they don't live in the Atlantic. I would take that picture and send it to the magazine that does all of the identification from pictures. I'd be curious to see what they say. Maybe it made it's way through the Panama canal and over to West End?There are species of fish in the Bahamas that we don't see anywhere else such as the tiger grouper. You'd never know what it was if you hadn't seen one before. How big was that dolphin - looks about 42 pounds from the picture - almost as long as Richard. It was a great trip - just one bit of advice. If you make any trips in the future advise your room mates to bring ear plugs as the consensus in room 12 was that you won the snoring award hands down!! I wish I had a camcorder as your body slam would have won "the funniest video award". I'd never quite seen that particualr tactic for subduing a wild fish. You were hilarious. |

Yep, I agree... Black Jack fish. As opposed to a Jack Black fish.

Thanks SL. That tail section is serrated and sharp like a bread knife. The Jack made good cut bait for the deep drop rigs, so I can't imagine its poison. You wouldn't think the fish would eat it if it was toxic

def Black Jack, caught lots of them deep dropping. All big jacks in the Bahamas are prone to ciguterra, even if you caught it deep, it will come shallow to feed so eat at your own risk. I wouldnt. amberJacks are often caught deep dropping in 700-1000ft but that does not make them same to eat either.
Black Jacks have a razor spine at the tail, sliced a finger to the bone on one once....

Don't count on that. The reason fish acquire ciguatoxin is from eating fish that have it. Small amounts of toxin are passed from prey to predator, and concentrate in the larger/older fish.

Bill is correct-Ciguatoxin is not toxic to the fish that ingest it so they have no biological reason to try to avoid fish that are eating the dinoflagellates that carry the ciguaterra neurotoxin.
