A few hours, two dozen drops, twenty-two rosies, and finally... I struck gold! Not a giant, but it's my first. I'm guessing about 8lbs. Of course, that also meant that I was done fishing. (1 golden tile per person limit
)Met my local Marine Patrol at the cleaning table. Nice guy. You should have seen his face when I opened the cooler! There were a pair of skipjack tunas below the rosies, so it looked like way more. He had actually never seen a rosie or tile, so I got to teach him little somethin'. Too bad I didn't go after barrelfish today too.

By far, the favorite reel in my collection!
Cogz... I was blind dropping/prospecting mostly south of Wilmont, at various depths. I was looking for tiles, but didn't want to fish the hump since it gets a lot of pressure. Towards the end I made a few drops starting about a mile north of the published Wilmont numbers, and eventually got the tilefish. The rosies are friggin everywhere! |

Buck,
I had the same idea last Saturday. Would not trade my Goldie for a slob sword.

Uncle Buck & Vinny - nice job guys. Both of you had nice hauls.
I don't think I've ever caught a Rosie. Are they also called "Streamer Bass"? I managed to catch one of them once off The Submarine NNE of the Hill. BTW - Buck, either that cooler is on the small side or else thats a damn nice Golden Tilefish for your first ever. Nice going and tasty too. If you filleted it, try steaking your next one and using a tuna recipe to grill it or saute it. It be the shiznit! Catch

The cooler is medium-sized (62qt). It measures 27" to the inside ends. The tile was about 25". |

Sorry about the size of the pic, I didn't take the time to reduce it.
I had a ball catching them, went offshore by myself. I was surprised by the size of some of those rosefish. The tile was good eating as usual, but I have to say that the rosefish are fast becoming my favorite. I can't find any regs on catching them, anyone else know of any? |

BB-Pro, I don't know of any regs on rosefish. My understanding of the species (from Sport Fishing Magazine's fish ID section in the late 90's) is that they were only recently introduced to science. Some guy caught one, had no idea what it was, and wrote in to the magazine inquiring about it and the magazine's response stated something about it being a relatively new species. I first caught them in April of '99 while prospecting around Hollywood Hills and the article was maybe a year old at that point. I guess they aren't as prevalent (or found at all - I've personally never seen one in thousands of drops) in the Bahamas nor are they found as frequently more inshore where the older generation fished for groupers and tilefish and could use buildings, trees, and antennas to triangulate their position.
