I have deep dropped in all depths around the Bahamas since the 80's and never caught one. Also LL for tiles for 3 years from St. Lucie to Cape Canaveral and don't recall ever catching them. I probably caught my first rosie around 1985 off Hillsboro, don't recall if I had the guts to eat it.
Their size, appearence, spines and depth protect them from being pounded. Not sure if I would fish for them alone, but the chance of catching a golden keeps me at it. |

If the article is correct, too bad you didn't submit it to science. You could have been the proud discoverer of Spinyashellus vinnius

I'm new to deep-dropping. Started around October '06. I've been catching so many of them rosies so easily, I just figured they were a common bottom species. I'm usually looking for tiles or barrelfish, but have become accustomed to the stringers of rosies... and honestly can't complain if that's all I bring home some days. They're an excellent consolation prize!

I use a hook more suited for tiles or even grouper, I think that if I dropped down to a yelloweye size hook my CPUE would increase.
They are fisty critters, sometimes they bite down so hard on the hook that it pertrudes out the top of their heads. |

It seems we've established the rough minimum depth for the species, what was the deepest you all have caught them? I believe my deepest was around a thousand feet but that's only because that's the deepest I was fishing that day.

My deepest last week was 1020'.
Between Port Everglades and Boca you only need to find the bottom to catch rosefish. Any bait will do, the tougher the better so you don't need to rebait. |
