Well guys it's been a while but finally made a trip offshore and had great conditions. 2-3 ft. seas and 1 kt current made for easy fishing. Probably should of fished deeper but spent most of the day in 240 ft. Ended up with 14 vermillions, ( largest 3 3/4 lb), 5 triggers , 3 porgies ,1 yellowmouth grouper about 7 lbs, and 2 amberjacks. I usually release my amberjacks but it seems like u Florida guys think they're the cats meow. Oh yea, I hooked something really large but my double line (130 braid) was severed about 1 ft above the swivel knot. Til next time....

Nice catch. Most " florida guys" aren't real fond of the AJ's either. They are usually worm ridden.

Here's the scoop on AJ's:
On the Atlantic side they're known for being very wormy. In the Gulf--regardless of size--they're generally clean. The places to find a wad-of-spagetti-looking worm are right at the tail, just under the dorsal fin, or right behind the gut pocket. I've cleaned hundreds of AJ's from Destin to Biloxi, and never found them just slam full of worms, like I hear the Atlantic ones are. Regarding your grouper, that appears to be a scamp, not a yellowmouth. There are very subtle differences. They taste the same, though, so it doesn't matter all that much.

I admit that the ring patterns on this fish are usually not visable but I assure you that the yellow jaw and the typical speckled pattern was what we saw when boated. Does the true scamp have the yellow on his lips and aren't their broomtails alot more broom-like?
Nevermind , I just did some research and found that the tail in this photo does suggest that the fish is a true scamp. Thanks for the heads up!

Scamps are generally a bit lighter in color than yellowmouths, which are more dark brown and chocolaty looking. The color variance between the species is slight. The yellowmouth will have a bit of yellow in his tail as well. It will be along the trailing edge, right in the center. Scamps lack this feature. Regarding the tails, scamps get more of the tassel-like tips as they get larger. A barely legal scamp will just have elongations on the top and bottom of his tail. A 20 pounder will have a full broom. One that's in between will have a tail somewhere in between. Lastly, yellowmouths tend to be a bit more squatty than scamps. This trait, like the aforementioned color difference, isn't an easy one to identify until you've seen many of one species or the other. |
