Default Cobia question

I just recently caught a cobia while deep dropping in 350 feet of water. I felt it was pretty unusual. Are cobia often caught by anyone down deep?

Nice fish. Are they really that good to eat? I just got a 42 pounder running along the beach off Hatteras NC. Cleaned it at the doc, but nobody wanted it. Think I will keep the next one.

54bullwinkle, they are excellent. maybe there weren't any knowledgable fisherman at the dock at the time. It could be a regional thing though, up in the NE they love Bluefish (yuck). I don't know anyone that eats them in MS/LA.

Bluefish aren't very good table fare no matter where they are caught but are especially poor down here as their meat is much softer, even mushy, due to the elevated water temperature. At their best they are gray, fishy tasting, and just not good eating. They are however good fighters and fun to catch. The guys love them for tile bait up north. Harry

also excellent mako bait while fishing for 'em between the 20 and 30 Fathom Curves. A bluefish fillet, tapered and butterflied, with a big 'ol neon yelow skirt is tough to beat (except maybe a tuna fillet).

Catch

we gte a run of cobias down deep off jupiter every year.. usually 130 feet. They tend to be on the bottom with the bull sharks. I woudl imagine he could have been on a shark down that deep
