Been wanting to get in on some King Mackerel fishing for some time now but have never done it, so when I got an invite to fish on good friend Danny Kee’s boat “Carolina Melody” for a quick lesson I jumped at the chance. Onboard was Danny, Rob and myself, we left Rudee about 630 and started looking for bait, finally after several attempts we found the bait just off the Ramada, filled the livewell and headed south. Put out a six rod spread of live bunker and after about 10 minutes of slow trolling we see a boil on the port short rigger, the fish misses, I drop the bait back feel the fish pick it up and we have about a 35 pound Cobia hooked up. Get that fish in the net and on ice and we put the baits back out and as Danny is throwing some chunks out I see a small shark swim three feet from the transom, we come to all stop and three lines go down first fish is a small Hammerhead, the second fish is also a small shark but we had yet to see the third fish and this one was steady taking line. After a 30 min. fight the fish finally shows itself and it’s a massive Cobia, stick it with the gaff get her onboard and she weighs in at just under 75 lbs and is 62” long
The water temp was 75 degrees and we were slow trolling live Menhaden on King rigs about one half to one mile directly off the Sandbridge fishing pier. AWESOME day on the “Carolina Medley”!!! Thanks to Danny and Rob!!! VIDEO LINK: http://www.chumlordfishing.com/movies/Cobia.mov ![]() ![]() ![]()

Killer catch guys. Great work on the Speedmaster and the Tyrnos. What a slob of a cobia. However, not sure I would have left him on the gaff like that just over the water. I like to bring em in ASAP and right into the coffin. I have seen cobia come alive and go ape chit on the gaff straightening the gaff and popping the line.
Congrats!! Juani |
