Thought I'd share the expierience..
My wilfe & I were avid divers, but I cannot dive anymore for medical reasons. Every year we take a trip with a dive group she has known for yrs. to popular scuba destinations. I am now going to start fishing these trips, and will post what I find. This year (last week) were went to Curacao (next to Aruba, about 45nm from Venezuela). I had spent a great deal of time trying to schedule a charter boat over the i-net, but mostly didn't get responses or got vague info. I finally located and tenatively scheduled a 53' hatteras named War Bird. When I got there, the boat was sold and moved to Bonaire. I started trying to find another charterboat...the concierge at the resort was pretty clueless..she kept trying to talk me into using a guy she knew with a 14' center console. I kept trying to explain I wanted something a little bigger...that there were going to be upto 6 of us on the charter. It took 3 days of calling, searching, and asking around until I found a 43' hatteras named Tana that chartered. $450 for 1/2 day. It took us the better part of 2 1/2 hours to find the marina..no one could give good directions, and the only phone number I had was for a tour desk at a different resort who referred the boat...Plus the roads are not well marked...unless you read dutch, and then it probably wouldn't have helped. ( I got directions like: "go to the 3rd good road, not the bad road, and turn to the log house, but don't go in, turn again, and go around the far water...then ask there.."). Anyway, in our favor, the captain was on island time too, so we show up at the dock at 9:30 and he is still waiting, and asked if we still want to go. We finally get out...The tradewinds blow 20-25 kn this time of year, so on the leeside of the island the ground swell was 6-8 with a pretty long period..very tolerable....but a lot sloppier when we trolled out past the east end into open water. The mate and capt were pretty lackadaisial about fishing..they only put out 2 black barts on flat lines. After an hour I asked if they were intent on putting out a full spread to which I told it was too rough, they didnt want to break the outriggers. Odd, though, that they had 50, 80, and 120gear onboard, and tagline setps on the riggers. The only upside was that we did actually raise and get tight on a (guess) 150# blue marlin. Unfortunately, once we hooked up, the capt. stopped the boat, and climbed down to the pit, and the mate couldn't be bothered to reel in the *only* other line (he told one of the party to do it).The boat drifted back and broadside, and the fish charged....spit the hook at 75 yrds back. to sum up: the marlin are around, the water is rough, and the boats/crew don't try real hard. But they did have the cooler stocked with Heinekens and Polars though I'd try again if I could work the 'pit myself.

Ouch. Sloppy boat work sucks. Sounds like a decent charter service might be able to survive there. I'm willing to work da pit if we can find a boat/ investor

I felt ashamed when I read your article. As a native of Curacao it hurts when things like this happen. Regretfully I have to say that our charter boats for fishing are not the best around the caribbean. There are only a few people doing fish charters and sometimes they lack some professionalism.
Charters are not our strongest point. I have a 46.6' Bertram that we use for sportfishing with some friend and if by any chance your back on our island I would gladly take you out as guests on one of our fishing trips.(we don't do chartes) most of our fishing trips are for Wahoos and Dolpins depending what time of the year. We also do some Blue Marlin but mostly during local or international competition held on the island or in Aruba and Bonaire. During Hurrican season we try to take advantage of the calm seas to do deep dropping on the north side of the island which most of the year is unaccesable because of very rough seas. Like yesterday we took a day off and went fishing for Red snapper (600 to 750') on the north side and we brought in about 50. My apoligies as a native of Curacao for what happened to you. P.s Just a tip: I have to admit that Aruba is very well catered for fishing charters. And some Pics attached. Robby |

Hey Robby:
Welcome to the SFC (carribbean section) forum and thank you, or on behalf of DonK's fishing report of Curaçao fishing experience, for your courteous reply and concern for his "pleasant tourist experiences". Hopefully, we may hear of some more of your fishing adventures from time to time if you will keep posting on this forum. We are always here for some Island time adventures to do and read about. It is difficult to get out on Island time every week when we are latched to the mainland; but we can certainly listen to a good Island time story every week. Yeah Mon, it sounds like your deep dropping can be a lot of fun with yummy rewards when you can fish on the North side. Did you mean to say Silk Snappers (Yellow eyes), instead of Red Snapper? Check out the Deep dropping forum if you are not yet familiar with this site. Maybe, you have some nice photos to post there as well? Don K , thanks for the fishing report. It is nice to visit those littler Lattitudes. You are a trouper and I am sure you will do better in the future. (Hint for future reference: get their top and bottom numbers, for your next charter, and do a Google earth of the spot and make a printer copy. You may not know where you are but you can find and get someone to point in the right direction, no matter what language you are speaking. But only if you have access to the Internet at some point in time. ) ![]() Robby, if anyone else is travelling to Curaçao, perhaps you may be able to advise them where they may be able find a decent charter, should they need to ask. Those were some nice photos of the fish, and your boat. To answer your question on the last post.... as I was thinking the exact same thing... It was just funny to see the photo of you guys holding up the fish (kingfish) for the pose, when there are another 9 NICE Wahoo and a cute little shark in the foreground, plus the other fish on the side. Normally we prefer the Wahoo and would likely hold up of of those big ones for a photo. Thanks, that is a great picture anyway: it doesn't really matter which fish you hold up, it looks like you had a great day doing it. ![]() Stay in touch. |

Thanks Risktaker for your explanation. We are holding up our Kingfish as for us in this region the King fish is more of a trophy then the Wahoo. Wahoo's you find all around and especially in Dec and Jan. Eventhough I donot consider us the best fishermen here in Curacao I can say that we enjoy each and every trip we make.
I would gladly advice or even better put anyone in touch with some experienced guys in catching fish, most of them regretfully don't do charters. They have the love and passion for the sport. I find most charters around here to be a little too comercial if I may say. I will certainly post some more pic's of Curacao and also from our catches. Most of our deepdroppings didn't bring up BIG fishes but we love the snappers for a good meal. As you know we have different names here for fishes and I haven't really check out the official or english names for them. If you know a site where they have pic's and names I would gladly look up the names of what we catch around here. Yes I think we get out some yellow eyes and queen snappers too. I will check with a fishing buddy of our team that has most of the pic's and I will post them for you to name them with your common names. Some disadvantage we have here is that about 80 to 85 percent of the year the sea is very rough, I mean 6 to 8 footers being very normal. Take today according to WindGURU: Weather forecasts for windsurfing, kitesurfing and other wind related sports, 22 knots wind with 7.2 ' waves and this is considred not a very bad day it can be worse. My apoligies for my grammar for as you know that we, not like most of the caribbean island, are Dutch and english being a second foreign language for us. We have much more influence of Spanish (30 Miles off the coast of Venezuela and Colombia) than English or even the Dutch. Like I always say, we carry a dutch pasport but we feel more Caribbean and Latin then Dutch. (I hate the "Dutch Treat") Explaining Pics: Pic with lobsters. This pic was made in the Aves Island (Venezuela) 76 Miles from Curacao and 34 mils east of Bonaire between Bonaire and Los Roques (Ven. Very good fishing grounds. Picture with grouper. This hungry grouper was caught trolling for Wahoo and Barracuda.(Aves) Releasing Blue in Curacao To Dolphins caught on the way to the Aves Islands[IMG] and Cliff with his Wahoo cuaght in the Aves Islands Have a nice day |

It is wonderful to hear (visually) your reply on this gorgeous Sunday afternoon. I have a long list of honey-doos today, (slang, for wife wants me to get it done, TODAY! ), which involves me being inside the house for a good while. So, as long as I am inside, I sit in my rocker/swivel chair, and every so often sipping a beer, (No Heinekens today mate, but some Full Sail Pale Ale,which you should really try sometime: it is gorgeous, Hood River, OR - gorgeous) ; and it just so happens that "my hooker girlfriend is sitting on my desk too", slang for my computer is sitting on my desk, too. My wife gets gealous when she sees me interacting with her, and she gets second seat. So the word to the wise is to keep the Alpha female, feeling like the alpha female. So American English lesson, English lesson, hopefully you enjoyed the dialogue just as much as I have enjoyed your posts. And I see you have Google earth already dialed in. In can learn from your advice: but we are exchanging information, like cyber pen-pals. BTW, by the way, your written English is perfect. I understand you better than some people try to type English on some of these internet forum threads. So you are golden with your English tying skills. We may have a serious communication problem if you were to rattle off a post en Español. Many would lose track of the conversacion. So your English is excellent for this forum. Oy Tudo Bom. Oh, pardon my english speaking limitations.More on the deep dropping fish identification later, my lovely wife is asking how I am making out. And I say yes, I am doing good, but I have to leave now. Back to the work! Ciao. RT |

Hi Robby!
Thanks for the reply! I appreciate the invite and would like to reciprocate if you should find youself in South Florida! Your offer really demonstrates the genuine friendliness I found with everyone on Curacao! I guess as a follow up commentary I shouldn't paint overly broad strokes about Curacao! I am sure there are lots of folks such as yourself who ARE knowlegeable and serious about fishing....I was just venting out my frustration of my one and only experience there. Risktaker, Thanks for you input as well! I am striving to better prepare myself for these 'jaunts'...I appreciate your pointers! I'd definitely like to hook up with you and fish sometime...your comments on this site are always very insightful, relevent, and direct...I am the kind of person that can appreciate that!

DonK:
Thank you for the kind response. It always makes one feel good when someone expresses sincere compliments for their work. Ok, I'm feeling good now. Thanks. Sure, let's go out and fish sometime: just call me anytime, hopefully with a day in advance notice. As you may know, I am boatless, well actually I have a 31' Alland (shoal draft sloop) in the back, but that is not a conducive vessel for the Swordfishing jaunts. I am happy to offer the other items necessary for the trip: fuel, bait, food, beverages, including rum if needed, as well as the good company. I am usually pretty ambitious to jump at opportunities to go swordfishing, even on a weeknight if the Mrs. will allow me. Dr. Dr., do you think I have any type of addictive behavior problems? Well at least it is a good hobby to have. And look at the Location. We are indeed wise to take advantage of this sport, especially since we can and with relative convenience. Thanks. And the Goose egg stench is off now. 1 for 1 last night but the freezer still needs some more goodies in it.
