NASSAU Grouper closed season

NASSAU GROUPER now have a closed season from Mid December to Mid February during their spawning aggregations.

Posession of these fish during this time may result in the confisaction of your vessel and or fines and imprisonment.

This season applies ONLY to the Nassau grouper, all other reef groupers and deep water species are OK.

are they really agressive in that time . ive only been to bimini in spring time and if so is that why it is closed all year in florida

it is because they need to gather in a high enough concentration in order for the spawning to work. They are easy to catch in these groups and so are vulnerable to being wiped out once the population drops enough.

They are likely banned in FL because their population is at the minimum required for sustaining the species in the area.
