Default General Tortuga II

Just got back from another trip in the Tortugas with Capt. Yuri on his new boat. This is my second trip with Yuri and I have to say there is no one better. I have fished Yankee Capts and Fishfinder many of times and have had great sucess, but I always have much more fun on a six man trip.

The first drop we slammed the Vermillions all about 2 pd. fish. And pulled up a couple mutts and moved on. Next stop the yelloweyes were chewin so i got a few for dinner. Sunset we stopped for the mutton bite in 150'. That night I ended up in double digits and think I had 12 by sunrise. The day was slow and I didn't get another good fish by 11:00 so I decided to sleep the day away and get ready for the nighttime muttons. I woke up at 6:00 took a shower and had dinner. The rest of the crew caught a few mutton, 2 scamps and 15 and 20# black while I was a sleep.

My bait was gettin old by the second day so I took some time to catch some gogs and kings. Anytime you wanted a 20# king just throw out a flatline and in 20 seconds you were hooked up. The bad thing about that is they loved to eat your weights on the way down or on the way up with a slob mutton. I lost probably 10 fish that way, but thats fishin'.. Anyways by the next morning I had my limit of 20 fat pinks. We cleaned up the boat and headed for the barn. One guy backed out last second so we only went with 5 guys. I ended up high hook with the 20 and the others were close behind with 13 - 18 each. What another great trip I can't wait for the next one.

Here are some pics of the haul

swwweeeeettttttt!!!

I am stoked. I am heading down Thursday. I have been sleeping with my rods and gear out of excitement and anticipation for the last couple days. We are going to fish west of the Tail End on the first day and then run way way west of the Fort on the second day in the direction of the Pulley Ridge (Jurassic Park).

I hope Yuri is well. I took a charter with him six years ago on the Andy Griffiths (slow boat to China) with my wife's family from Jamaica and they almost drove him to drink again with the amount of rum these guys consumed. Yuri's a good cap...he's always had some sweet yellowtail and mutton holes.

Capt. Juan I know you are stoked about the trip. The mutton were eattin the fresh kings, but then the sharks would move in and the gogs worked better. The flyin fish are all very small but the gogs were thick on the bottom in the 130' to 150' range. Day bite was slow! but the tails in 60' were big and hungry. good luck on your trip. I have a invite to go again in 2 weeks but I don't think the warden will allow it. lol

Thanks for the tip Turtle.

The first day, I am fishing in a lot of Yuri's spots west of the tail end bouy in that really rocky area (won't provide the depths or exact locations but you know where they are), but we are going into the Fort to sleep the night because a couple guys on my boat have never seen it and we're getting a tour the next morning. I am a Trustee of the National Parks (Dry Tortugas, Everglades, Biscayne and Cypress). I am trying to convince these guys to spend the second night out on the boat instead of running back to Key West. It makes sense because we're gonna be some 30+ miles west of the Fort in the land of giants. I will keep ya posted and post some pics.

Juan
