Definately still an option. Drift between the reefs on sand with live bally's or greenies... long flurocarbon leaders with just enough weight to keep it near or on bottom. You should do well.

Lightbulb Mutton Spawn over?

remutton.JPGCrushed em in the tortugas this weekend. Slack tide seemed to be the hottest bite. Think the strong full moon current kept the fish laying out of the heavy flow. Fished yellowtails in the flow, and muttons @ the slack. Thinking the spawn is bout done, as all the fish I cut yesterday were devoid of roe. Empty bellies though....think that contributed to the strong bite. Ran out of fresh gogs, went to dead sardines, and got the biggest mutton of the weekend @ 21.3 lbs.

Finally got this pic sized right

Nice Butch.
Wish I could have gone with ya.
Right now I am just waiting on boat mechanics
But probably just going to repower in the next couple of weeks.

You should tag along on next years run. Looks like we'll have a spot or two open for Mays trip.

Mutton bite was slow in Jupiter Saturday night. Current was ripin'. Took a lot of weight to hold bold bottom. Did manage to get 2 keepers. One was nice size well above 20". Also got a few yt, and a dozen 14-16" lanes.

Anchored, then after awhile had to pulled the hook because of the bad current. We keep drifting over our numbers and that produced.

Default crankin current

I asked because many times during a rippin current, a really long leader will get the bite. Wonder if the fish were just staying back out of the flow, and ambushing your baits as you went by.....Sometimes I wonder if I think about what the fish are thinking a little too much. Nah Snapper slabs on the grill for fourth of july don't suck

Way to adapt Manny.
Something I've been considering is anchoring up and putting out 60 -100 ft of line then using the downrigger to plop it on the bottom. 10 lbs should hold it down there

Thumbs up Downriggin

Gaitor,
Have used that trick grouper fishin w/ much success. The rigger clip works well, and then your not tryin to drag lead, and da fish. Pretty livies seem to work the best, and elicit the kind of strike that pulls the clip loose.

DF2,

I was using over 50' leader, and over 2lbs of lead.

Wink rig..re-rig.....re-re-rig.....

Right on. Had some issue gettin em to bite this weekend in the heavy current as well. Used the slack tide in the Quicksands to our advantage Were doing the best on light flouro leaders, and knocker rigs Strange but true. As soon as the water started screamin again...the gluttons quit playin.
Ended up bieng a 45 min scramble.....Then back to dealin w/ all the little ankle biters Worked at it all day Sat tryin to figure it out. Finally stumbled onto a solution for a spell .
