Default Mutton techniques?`

Anyone care to share their favorite Mutton techniques?

Like what to look for when reading the bottom machine?
Ledges or scattered rocks? Depths?
Do you mark fish on finder first upcurrent or past the structure/
Best time early morning or midday or eve?
Are they current motivated? Swift or slow current?
Do you use a chum bag north of Ft Lauderdale? One on the bottom one off the back of the boat?
Are 20-30-50 yards of flourocarbon really necessary?
I saw one guy hand lining them with a heavy weight straight off the transom and a swivel/breakaway clip suspending his fishing line off the bottom with his bait 30 yards behind gently swaying in the current? He managed 2 lines at once. He caught some big ass fish.
What is your bait of choice? Grunt plugs, greenies etc...?
Cant I just use an egg sinker on my main line with 15-20 ft of flourocarbon and a single hook Grunt or ballyhoo plug?
Does anyone drift over structure for Muttons or do you need to anchor?

Thanks
Dr T

and use a chum cage on the bottom i like the Captain Ray Rochers one R$S tackle it holds two blocks of chum. My favorite bait is a Goggle Eye and Mackeral steaks too. I like a rod on the bottom and let rodney do the rest don't forget the ballyhoo...plugs they are deadly and Bonito strips.

DL, you are so right. Rodney can tear up the muttons. Mack steaks are great and last through all the little guys that will steal you bait.

I find putting baits on the bottom with long leaders are more successful than egg sinkers. If you are anchored.

I must be missing something- How do you get a bait on the bottom without an egg sinker?

Up in jupiter we don't use chum bags due to the current and relativley short leaders around 10 ft. Also like they said above the muttons tend to hang on the flat side of the reef-grass/sand.
