Default butterfly jigs and new beetle jigs from shimano...

anyone realisitically use butterfly jigs in south florida, i bought 2 last year and i tried them a couple times. no bites, maybe we used them incorrectly or int he wrong area, anyways i havent used them since. shimano is now coming out with a new jig called a beetle jig, pretty much looks like a standard jig with 2 fixed hooks in the back, was gonna try some of these out cause i do use bucktails to catch muttons/groupers while drifting/kite fishing. they dont ship till march. wanted to know peoples input on these. here is the link of em

Hi Ivan,

I was off Jupiter jigging on the wrecks with butterfly jigs. they consistently got hit. I was wailing on crevellys and amberjacks, and lost two jigs to something toothy..one time it was hit on the way down, I didn't even get a chance to jig it.

The most productive tech. was to drop it down to the bottom; jig hard and fast for about 5 cranks and send it back down. (we were working the lower end of the water column). I am now a firm believer in BF's..

I haven't heard of the beetles

Marauder1 has a lot of success with vertical jigs (Butterfly is just Shimano's brand name for 'em.) I use mostly the Williamson Benthos jigs. 5, 7, and 9oz. I usually have a heavy spinner with a jig ready (65lb power pro), when we troll. It's usually the first thing I send down under debris or fishy weedlines. 200-300ft, then a fast retrieve. Mahi go friggin nuts when they see it. I've also gotten wahoo and blackfin tuna with that technique.

Those jigs are great on reef ledges and wrecks. But be prepared to lose a few. I've started using about 10-inches of 7-strand cable to protect from kingfish and wahoo bite-offs.

Dadgum sewer mackerels (barracuda) bit off two of my jigs when trying to wail on blackfins offshore. We were standing by waiting to unload our cargo onto a semisubmersible drilling platform in 3600', and passing the time. I'll bring some #8 wire next hitch.

Go for it DF. I kinda stole it from a guide that took me fishing on Lake Okeechobee years ago. We caught a mudfish or two and he called them "Sewer Bass." When I started fishing for a living, people would ask what the cudas were, and I'd reply, "Those? They're sewer mackerel." It caught on with the other charter boats on my dock pretty quickly. Calling them "sewer mackerel" makes me laugh still.
